Could use some serious opinions and input here... Im about to upgrade from my rebel xsi and am having a hard time deciding if the m2 is worth the extra grand for what i do.

I shoot portraits/outdoor shots a lot; however im starting to pick up weddings and bridals so i need a body with better low-light capabilities.
I have no use for the video feature. I just want to make the right choice on picture quality.

Thanks!

Both cameras are highly capable for your type of work, and both will produce great images. You already have the glass to make either one sing.
The main advantages of the Mk II for you would be the improvements in viewfinder, LCD, operational responsiveness, and of course even more image detail, at the expense of humongous RAW files (the JPEG rendering on the Mk II has not impressed me, though I don't own it yet so I don't know if it is possible to improve with non-default settings).

A side by side comparison of features may be helpful.

Side by Side

dpreview is always a good place to visit for this type of information. Then it's up to you to decided if the improved features are what you need and are worth the extra $$$$.

Looking to pull the trigger soon... Anyone else?

Does the m2 thump the 5d in lowlight? Or can it hold its own?

I've been upgrading the 20/30/40 bodies over the years and there is a huge difference in how quickly they get an image up on the LCD.
Then a couple months back I got a 5D for a good price and plan to get a 5D2 later this spring so I managed back before Xmas to go shooting with a friend that has one so I could compare.

I see very little improvement in high ISO on the II over the 'classic'.
I suppose the LCD is better, but I don't have issues with the older style LCD. On his copy at least the LCD was too good - perhaps it's adjustable or can be color corrected but it showed a beautiful image, color wise, compared to my 40 and 5 but when opened in LR it looked about the same.
Focus wise I love (LOVE) the 40D. I've shot a wedding a good number of other ports with the 5D classic and have no issues with focus- perhaps my copy is above average, I don't know. I do know folks that sold them cause the focus wasn't good enough (for them for weddings). And yes, I was shooting ISO3200 at 1/30th at 2.8 - about as dark as it can get for natural light useage. Since the 5D2 has the same focus system I see no advantage.

The extra custom functions of the 5D2, custom menu, flash menu bit build in, sensor cleaning, HTP are all things I have in my 40D that are not in the 5D Classic that I do miss (because I use them a lot). But it's not getting in the way of me shooting.

THe one thing that bugs me, that has me annoyed by the 5D, is how slow it is to get a pic on the LCD and how I can fill the buffer (shooting raw and not in drive mode mind you). I like to check teh LCD to make sure I've not got odd shadows, see teh histogram, etc and the 40D is nearly instant where the 5D means I wait and I really don't like that.

I'm torn though - I can get TWO used 5Ds for less than one 5D2 and I don't no way no how need or want 21mp. 14bit RAW is nice (20/30 to 40D wise) but I don't see much IQ difference between the 40D and 5D (5D is actually a tad better). I've always wanted a 1D3 - it's the ultimate wedding body IMO -great high ISO, tons of customization, rugged, best focus out there, two slots - and on and on, and you can get a used one for about the same price or less than a 5D2. I think I'd love another 5D, a 5D2 and a pair of 1D3's, but that's $9000 even buying most of them used so it won't happen all this year.

In your position what would I do? If you just a hobbyist then a used 5D for $1200-1500 would be the ticket. If you have the money get a 15mm fisheye - WOW. Or the 16-35 - again, wow (as they relate to use a FF body).

I see you ended up with the mark 2 - can you tell me what your impressions of it are? And why are you selling your good lenses?

I, too, am curious why you would buy the 5DII then sell your best lenses?

I did not see this on your lens list but I bought my 5DII with the 24-105mm f/4L IS kit lens which is a really nice general all-purpose piece of glass. I expect that to be my primary bread and butter lens and is perfect for your type of photography.

For weddings I'd also recommend the 580EX II flash unit. (Got mine for $360 shipped on Ebay) It is a powerful flash that recycles in milliseconds and is perfectly integrated into the 5DII firmware. And, with the 5DII, it automatically adjusts for full coverage illumination over zoom settings all the way from 15mm to 105mm.

Oh, btw, check the firmware version of your camera. If it is not 1.0.7 then you will need to update your firmware. It is easy to do and fixes the infamous "black spot" related problems.

[OT] The 580EXII recycles in about 2 seconds from a full power burst. So even on minimum power you wouldn't reach recycle times of miliseconds.
