I love using my cheapo digital, and I've gotten some shots that have been given good ratings at the other websites that I visit. I would love to get a fancy camera soon, but want to hone my skills a little more before I do. I am looking for particular exercises to do in order to get more creative and proficient. Thanks!

Put on your thickest skin a and jump into the fray with a weekly challenge. Commenting on others entries is a great way of learning what does and does not work for you. Don't worry about the cheapo digital, You can find many examples on this site of highly rated images photographed with point & shoots.

(First post under my new & improved screen name! Did anyone notice? Does this screen name make my butt look fat?)

I can't believe you'd wear that username--it doesn't go with your eyes.

Welcome chucksmyboy! definately put on your thick skin if you enter the challenges! Look at some of the more awesome pictures on the site, and notice that they get 1's and 2's (it helps when someone gives you some!)

regarding your cheapo digital, I just noticed that someone scored quite high with a cell phone picture. A good artist can make great pictures with anything.

edited to add:
(I'm somewhat of an expert on this site--after all, I've been here for a total of almost 3 1/2 weeks now!

Welcome new one.
You may like getting into one of the side challenges if there is one about a subject that you would enjoy, to improve your skills. You can get a lot of good feedback, and see what people are saying about each other's shooting without stressing about scores.
You can do a lot with a cheapo digital. I carry one almost anytime that I have my Levi's on.
