Maybe she's old news for some of you, but she's a fairly recent discovery for me. In any case, here's an opportunity to discover or revisit her work.

Late last year, I stumbled over a book at the library called Slide Show: The Color Photographs of Helen Levitt. Here were street photographs of New York City -- children at play, adults caught in comical poses or situations. Lots of humor and irony, but always honesty.

Levitt began working in the 30's and has a body of work spanning over fifty years. She befriended Bresson, and the styles of the two are often compared.

And God bless her -- at 95 years old, she's still with us! (Curious, Steve [ pawdrix], restless wanderer of the streets of New York that you are, if you ever had the opportunity to meet her.)

NPR Interview
An excellent eight minute interview from 2002. Self-effacing and at times prickly, Levitt didn't interview often. Here she talks candidly with NPR's Melissa Block about her life and work.

Lens Culture
Short bio and slide show.

PROFOTOS Bio
Another bio with a picture of Levitt.

Ah, she's really good. I hadn't realized she was still with us; I'd thought surely she was gone to her reward by now... I used to have a book of hers. The ex kept it though.

Interview says she used a right-angle spy lens (she had a different name for it) which explains a lot.
