PM received... thanks for the feedback... you've confirmed my concerns with every one of the contenders. And I'm at least pleased that you didn't like the one I had ranked 3rd of the lot...
You know the greatest problem with asking people's opinions is that they might not match your own. :) |

Much better than my last challenge entry, and in that 5.5 range that'll all but guarantee no comments. |

I had/have a great idea for a street shot and I've tried to get it a few times but fell flat and this time is no exception, I missed out again. Just couldn't get everyone all together.
I hope all your shots are doing well :)

I picked the wrong one. I picked the one that had more of a story, but was less visually appealing. But I've been told that my background is cluttered--you can't really change that too much... If I would have gone for a different angle so that my background wasn't cluttered, you'd miss the main subject(s). I should have gone with the visually interesting, but not much of a story shot. Don't get me wrong, the score's not that bad, but I thought street photography was more about the story and less about the visuals.

Back to the twin scores, LOL! I can't figure out whether my comment in street is an insult or not. It's an anonymous comment, so I guess I'll just have to wait till after the challenge to find out their intent.

I'm there too - with the twinned scores (or close - the last vote dropped my Street into 4.1 range).
A pair of browns, here I come. :(

Anyone who would leave a comment like that basically understand the concept and principles of street photography.
Part of the allure of the great street shot is that it speaks DESPITE the surroundings.
Worry not, dear lady!

I'm actually confused on how to vote on this one. Sitting in my own little world before DPC, I hadn't heard the term "street photography". I saw it in the side challenge, but didn't really look. Just did a little research before the challenge, and my take on things was that it was an interesting slice of life, kind of a window into someone else's world.
The problem is that there are a couple of shots that I really like, that are more an interesting picture of the surroundings, not a peak into someone else's world. I don't want to DNMC them, because I'm not convinced that my understanding of street photography is correct.
Anyone care to lecture, I mean explain their understanding of street photography? I'd really like to hear people's views on this... |

Your best bet is to read some of the existing threads on Street Photography - they have some very good links and discussions.

When in doubt, be open-minded. I tend to vote positively, instead of negatively. I start at 3 and then see if there's any reason to make the score higher. If it's beautiful, I'll give it some points. If it's dynamic and exciting, I give it some points, if it meets the challenge in an interesting way, I give it some points, etc. |

If you can doctor the champagne, it's probably easier to poison a wedding than to shoot one.
Stand on a grassy knoll. It won't help, but lots of people will think you did it.

ha, how did you manage to wrangle yourself a wedding? that sucks hardcore, those things are scary. just try and avoid the mother of the bride, ive heard they get pretty nasty at times, usually at the photographer:) ummm portraits arent too bad, practice on friends beforehand so you get an idea of the type of portraits you are aiming for. take lots of shots when people arent paying attention to you and look natural, no one likes the posed wedding craP9well at least i dont). and try and start a mosh pit so you feel at home |

Maybe it's time for me to step away from the shutter button for a while.
A comment I just rec'd on my 'street' photo (I XX'd out the part that would likely identify my photo):

ROFL! I got a comment that could be construed as an insult too. I can't show it without giving away my entry. But I'm really dying to know who left it. |

Wow!
That's a seriously special kind of......person!
Personally, I'd recommend that you report that comment to SC as mean & hurtful.
That's completely out of line......there's no excuse for a comment like that.

I did one two weeks ago - doing another one this weekend, and I'm not a wedding shooter either.
Tips:
Shoot lots! And then more. You want to have everything documented in some form or another.
Before the ceremony (and hopefully before the day of the ceremony) get with the bride and groom, find out what they want as far as wedding group shots - bride/groom, families, attendents, etc. WRITE THAT DOWN. Then find out when they want to do those shots - after the ceremony before the reception is the best time. Take out your list, shoot all those shots (multiple times to deal with the eyes closed issues).
Try to get pictures at some point of everyone who's there.
Check your settings often - you'll change the ISO for inside shots, so remember to change it back for outside shots. Which reminds me - for those group shots? If possible, shoot them outside where the light is better (if that is indeed the case.)
Not sure with your camera, but if you have the option of shooting RAW plus a small jpeg, do so. You can then immediately give them a disk with all the small jpegs on it to let them see what they may want edited for printing.
Have fun, don't stress, don't get drunk until everything has been shot. And take extra batteries and cards. |
