Not sure which forum to put this in...

The basic editing rules say that I can use unsharp mask, but it also says "use only Adjustment Layers (or their equivalent). An Adjustment Layer is a special type of layer containing no image data that lets you experiment with color and tonal adjustments without permanently modifying the pixels. Adjustment Layers must be applied in Normal mode."

I'm using elements, and unsharp mask, shadows/highlights, etc cannot be done in an adjustment layer. So when I do shadows/highlights and unsharp mask, it is changing the pixels. Is this allowed or not?

thanks!

You're fine. With a few exceptions, these destructive sorts of tools (i.e. they don't work in a separate layer but operate on the image itself) can be used as long as they're done uniformly.

When it says "only adjustment layers" it means those are the only kinds of layers you can use -- it doesn't mean you have to use them to apply changes.

Learn something new - I thought Highlight/Shadows could only be used in Advanced!
