I have a 4 mb file and I'm entering a contest that requires no more than a 2 mb file. What's the best way to do this? I know the save for web option gives you the ability to optimize for a certain file size -- but only under 1mb.
If I resize, it seems like I just have to keep guessing 'til I get to the right file size...
By the way, It's photoshop elements.
thanks! |

File>save as> choose JPG as your option, and it will give you a slider for image quality. Adjust the slider and look for the new file size in panel on right, probably need about quality 7 to to get to 2 mb.
At issue also is how large the image needs to be, in terms of pixels. The above method gives you a full-size image at a lower resolution. If you first resize the image to a smaller dimension (say, from 3400 pixels to 1500 pixels, which is plenty for web use) then you will be able to save at a higher quality setting.

thanks, I don't know if they're using it for print or for web--it's a contest for the great backyard bird count. In looking at it again, they want the highest resolution but no more than 2mb. I was just wondering if there was a way to have it shrink your picture proportionally until a certain file size, or if I just had to guess while resizing.

"Highest resolution" specifically means "most pixels", so I suggest you take the full-sized image and see just how far you have to move the SaveForWeb quality slider to get the file size under 2MB.
For this specific purpose (I may be participating too), I'd recommend cropping any unnecesssary elements (especially branches/leaves) to reduce the file size, rather than resampling, and do not perform any additional sharpening. |

Thanks! I'd love to see what you enter! |
