Hey there,
I'm new to "dpchallenge" and have a question about how the voting tally system works.
I will seldom have time to vote on every pic,...I'll vote for the ones I think are best...and occaisionally others.
My question is this, I know if I vote an 8, 9 or 10 that's going to raise that photo's score. But what if I vote a 6 or 7...? Say I liked the concept but felt a few things were off to keep it from being a top competitor. But how does that photo I just voted 6 or 7 for compare to say a multitude I didn't even vote on.
Am I bring it down? Or helping it?
In other words...do we use an average or tally system here.
EXAMPLE 1(AVG):
Photo 1: Gets four votes (8,8,6,8) for a 6.5 average.
Photo 2: Gets one vote for an 8.0 average.
Photo 3: Gets three votes (9,9,9) for a 9.0 average.
Here Photo 1 is in last place due to my vote of "6" hurting said photo's score.
EXAMPLE 2(TALLY):
Photo 1: Gets four votes (8,8,6,8) for a 30 .
Photo 2: Gets one vote for 8.
Photo 3: Gets three votes (9,9,9) for a tally of 27.
Here Photo 1 wins, my vote of 6 in fact helps support the photo. Which is what I wanted.
So I realize that how my vote is counted makes a big impact on whether I am helping or hurting the photo's chances.
Can I get some clarification?

All votes are averaged, and the placement is just a ranking of those averages.
The best thing to do is vote on the images in the (random for each user) order they are presented to you.
Click on the first thumbnail, and vote on each image presented, in order.
Continue this approach as you have time, voting as much as you can.
This removes any bias you may have to only vote on pictures you like / ignore those that you don't. |

| I am thinking it is more like your first example, although I'm not fully positive. However, if you don't vote on 20% of the images, then it doesn't matter, cause your votes wont count at all. I wouldn't worry about what place your score will put the photo in, I would concern myself more on voting how you FEEL the photo should be voted. And actually, as a general rule, people prefer the comments more than the votes anyway. Besides, no one is ever going to know what your vote was unless you tell them anyway. |

Also, if you want to look at it that way, then if you don't vote on the photos you don't like...then you are actually helping them to place higher. For example...
say you really hate a photo, and would vote it a 1. Here are the votes...
4 4 4 1 This give it a 3.25
Say you hate the photo, and would give it a 1, but decide not to vote on it cause you don't like it...here are the votes
4 4 4 (without your vote) average is 4.
So in that case, by not leaving your vote, you are helping that photo to place higher, which really doesn't help the photo you like much at all.
So, as Eddy said...it's best to vote on photos you like and dislike in order to give a fair spread across the board. |

Okay...so it is an average system...
"However, if you don't vote on 20% of the images, then it doesn't matter, cause your votes wont count at all."
[[[Someone said the following...why? Do your votes only count if you vote on ALL the submissions?]]] |

No, your votes only count if you vote on at least 20% of the submissions. That's why I said 20%. If you vote on 19%, then no, your votes wont count. If you vote on 20% or more, then they count. |
