Some images rely on fine detail (tonal gradation in b/w photos would be one example). The sheer size of the square format can, of course, accomodate this best.

It doesn't have any more detail than any other 640-pixel image -- it just has more of it.

While this is (technically) correct, the sensation when viewing a larger image is not the same as with one of a smaller size.

Perhaps it's those kinds of optical tricks/conditioning which play into our preferences for crops of certain ratios.

I usually crop (freehand) to the image shape/composition I want, then resize to 640 pixels by whatever. The last time I did that, the second value was 427 (3:2 ratio) on the nose.

Yeah, this is generally what I do, I freehand to whatever fits the composition.

I resize to 640 wide or 600 high. On my monitor (standard IE setup and resolution 1024x768) an image of 600 high just fits, but 640 I can't see in one total. I suspect this is the same for many people.

I also crop freehand to suit the composition and find that hardly any subject needs a narrow and high image size. Also I don't prefer very wide images, I often crop tight.

I'm not sure that this would be a good idea - sure on a landscaped shot that would be pretty useful, but anything presented portrait might have fitting on a screen issues, what with the number of toolbars and the size of an average screen. 640 high images also JUST go beyond the size of my screen (probably only be a couple of pixels), so anything larger than that would severley be disadvantaged in a competitve environment.

just a thought, you could change your resolution to fit 640pix images portrait style.

That might not work, depending on the monitor. With my old monitor there was no way I could set my computer to fit a 640 high image on the screen.

During the period between changing my computer and changing my monitor I entered some slightly smaller pictures just so that they would fit on my screen. When I saw them on a higher resolution monitor, I was horrified at how small they looked.

Just to add a different perspective. I reduce the resolution of my monitor to 1280x1024 because 640 pixels just do not make a very large image at my normal 1600x1400.

sniper is an excellent shot, would have worked square, rectangle, landscape or portrait. Nevertheless, I see lotsa square entries coming, including my Centered. Congrats on your first ribbon hopper, prolly more to come.

I can see the complaints now "My picture got voted down because people had to scroll......".
