question for y'all

I have just signed up with a couple stock agencies (the easy ones to sign up with), and they are royalty free. I realize the arguments for both sides, i.e. that they encourage many people to buy the image, but on the flipside, sell the image for not very much.

however, i am wondering, why, if a company can buy an image for $1.00 and use it in ALL their adversiting, product labeling, and commercials, would they pay $250 for an image from a site like corbis??? are we REALLY selling ourselves short and making our work worthless by going royalty free?

I think the advent of easily available digital cameras and the internet is changing the stock photography market very rapidly. Let's hope the value of images doesn't fall too low too fast.

I think you kind of answered your own question. For certain things a $1 image might be just the ticket. For example when you're looking for a very generic image to illustrate a minor point. However, when you start looking for images that have the potential to influence the branding of a company or product they are going to pay a lot more. Not necessarily just for quality but more importantly for exclusivity.
