I have an opportunity to spend a weekend in Miami, wandering aimlessly and shooting. I have been to South beach a few times, so I'm looking for the opposite of South Beach to use as a Miami backdrop. I want the place to set the scene for the people that populate it. I know the perfect places in New York for what I am looking for (such as the bowery and spanish harlem), and in DC and Baltimore. What I am currently concentrating on is Miami and would like information on older areas of the city. I found a reference to Little Havana, but not much else. I'm mostly looking for personality of the average joe to the working poor.

If anyone lives in, does some shooting in, or knows about it, can you please let me know of special finds and places? Any area is possible, but one that has a hotel/motel/flophouse close by would really be great so I can shoot at all times of day without worrying about transportation. Pictures would be greatly appreciated, as would info, suggestions, links, etc.

Just checking in...will have to give details a bit later - in a rush right now.

In little Havana - there are areas on one street where a local artist has his works....think The Trail of Painted Ponies works but instead it is done with giant sized rooster statues ...will explain more later and give details.

You could find some interesting areas in Homestead....it is south of Miami. You would have to travel there. It is a contrast to South Beach. You have to be really careful in a lot of areas in Miami.

O.K. have a little breather time before I go teach.

**Note: Like any place you go to be aware of your surroundings and go during daylight hours to an unfamiliar place.

A good guidebook if you can get your hands on it at the library is The National Geographic Traveler Miami & The Keys.

Little Havana Roosters

I don't know if they are still there...I first heard about them on the Travel Channel back in 2007

Little Havana:
Little Havana's better known attractions are on or near S.W Eighth Street (Calle Ocho) between S. Miami Ave and S.W. 27th Ave.
Calle Ocho's culture is (according to the National Geographic Traveler) particularily strong between S.W. 12th and S.W. 27th Ave. which has been officially designated at the Latin Quarter.

Little Haiti
...while it has a lot of Carribean culture and folkart (especially murals) I have heard both good & bad things about the area. If you go, go during the day and MAKE sure you are aware of your surroundings.

Other areas of interest but are not a direct contrast to South Beach.

Dropped Bowl with Scattered Slices & Peels Sculpture
This monumental outdoor sculpture with multi-dimensional sections, represents
an imaginary moment in time when a huge bowl of orange slices and peels
drops to the ground and shatters. The artwork includes eight bowl
fragments in cast concrete with an overall weight of 124,000 lbs., four peels
in steel plate with painted surfaces, and five orange sections executed in
reinforced cast resin. Oldenburg is best known for his gigantic food
constructions and his daily object soft sculptures

For more of a floral/garden experience there is Fairchild Tropical Gardens

That I have been too when Chihuly was there and the grounds are beautiful.

Nearby, there is the beautiful Venetian Pools which is absolutely beautiful but unfortunately they are doing some major renovations until April 30, 2009. //www.venetianpool.com/

Wow! Thank you so much!

I am looking for little havana and little haiti, maybe even homestead, style places rather than gardens/sculpture though the gardens sounds like places I will definitely stop by just to see.

Anywhere else? Is downtown a bust - just tall building but not much atmosphere? I'm used to older northeastern growth and buildings - crowded, mixed, eclectic - I know some newer cities are just way to spread out to get the same feel (like Houston and Phoenix). Not sure where Miami falls in this spectrum - maybe in between...
