So, I am probably going to be in the market for a new lens soon, and I have some questions. First off, my budget is around $500-$600 tops. I need something that will fill the void between my 10-22 and my 100mm macro (my 2 lenses that I love). I currently only have the kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8 in that range, and I would like something flexible with glass as good as I can get for my budget. I also have the crappy Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II/III USM, so something a little longer would be nice as well (but not a requirement at this point). Fast would be nice, sharpness is probably the most important. I'll probably be using it inside with flash/strobes for portraits/snapshots/still life/random challenge entries most of the time.

I'm currently looking at these options from Canon (they all fit my budget and zoom range requirements):

Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS - $595
Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM - $229.95
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM - $409.95
Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM - $375

EF-S is fine with me as I have no plans to ever go full frame. Any thoughts out there? I'm open to 3rd party brands as well, I just don't know enough about them to even start a list.

Tamron 28-75 F2.8 (Probably going to get this one again as I didn't realize how much I really used it), can usually find used for $275ish.

That's what I'd recommend also. I use mine a LOT. One of the non-Canon lenses that totally holds its own against the Canon offerings.

That would be this one (on DPC), I assume? And this one at B&H?

Zoom range looks good, I really like the f/2.8 throughout the full range, about $350 new. Looking pretty sweet, guys. How sharp is it? Anyone care to show me a 100% crop?

Any other recommendations out there?

Edit: I can't seem to find the SP designation on the B&H site. Can someone verify for me that it is the right one? When you guys get a chance, of course. :)

That's the one. Doesn't always get listed with "SP" first. Check out the lens page for 18 7+ images witht his lens; Scalvert, in particular, has used it for LOTS of ribbons. It's optically just about the equal of Canon's revered 24-70mm f/2.8L at a fraction of the price, and it's a very decent near-macro lens as well, focusing down to 1:2 reproduction ratio.

ETA: the SP designator on Tamrons refers to "High Performance Specifications", whatever that means. They only make the one 28-75mm anyway, so you can't miss.

Thanks, guys. It sounds like we may have a winner! If there are any other opinions out there I'd still love to hear them.

I was gonna say a 70-200 f/4.. but that looks like out of the focal range you are seeking, so Tammy 28-75 seems like the best choice. A friend has it, loves it to death.

Tammy 28-75 from me, too. Focus is slow in low light, but it's tack sharp, and I've never had to remove any purple fringing from a shot taken with this lens. Ever.
