Here are some of the photos I took last week of the Sea Lions on the Columbia River. The first two are of the same animal, which managed to get a fishing lure embedded in his chin. The third photo shows a Sea Lion hauling out onto a floating platform that is almost submerged by the weight of several other animals. This one has some type of transmitter apparently glued to his back.

There have recently been reports of Sea Lions being killed and washing up on local beaches. I heard from a friend that one person was arrested, but I donĂ¢€™t know any details.

I hate when man and animal clash. I hope that nasty lure will fall out and not cause any infection.

As far as anyone shooting the sea lions on the Columbia as you know they sit just below the dams and eat thousands and thousands of salmon/steel-head. They are 140+miles from the Pacific when they are at Bonneville Dam. Many people make their living catching those fish. Another example of man vs. animal. They are trying to do everything they can to protect the fish and discourage the sea lions.
I hope anyone caught will be punished to the full extent of the law.

I hate stuff like that. I hope whoever is doing is caught soon, so it stops.

Sea Lions are pretty tough animals. You should see some of the scars these critters have. I don't know how long it would take the hook to rust through and fall out--probably quite a while. My guess is the dangling hook will get caught on something before too long and the lure will be pulled loose from the animal. Probably very painful, but I wouldn't think it would be life threatening.

They're just doing what Sea Lions do, which is to eat fish. I'd bet they've been coming up the river after the Salmon for a long time. Maybe even longer than humans have been fishing for the Salmon. I don't begrudge them the fish they catch, and I'm an avid Salmon/Steelhead fisherman. In my opinion, any idiot that shoots a Sea Lion simply because it's catching fish should have his _ss removed and handed to him.
