the title says it all. why would photos lock themselves on a memory card? no matter how often i delete them, they always show up the next time i upload photos. has anyone else had this problem?

I have had this problem a few years ago. I can't remember exactly how I solved it. I think that instead of trying to delete them in the camera, I put the memory card in a card reader connected to my computer & deleted them that way. Failing that I suppose the next step is reformating the card.

I reformat the card after every use. In the camera reformat. If you are on Mac you can drag it to the trash while holding option key. That usually does it. (might be option & shift, I haven't had to do that in a long time)

Reformat is a camera function. You do it from the menu system of your camera.

On your camera it's on the second from right menu tab, bottom-most option. I reformat every time after downloading photos.

The format option should be under one of the menu items on your camera. I don't have a 400D so I'm not sure exactly which menu that would be.

This might be a silly suggestion, but it may be worth mentioning that if you selected "protect" for any of your images, you'll have to de-select "protect" in order to delete them. I'm mentioning this only because I've done it a few times and forgot that I had protected the images.

I also format after download instead of deleting. Its a lot quicker and easier.

That's right, you can use the camera to protect (looks like a little key icon) specific images, which will prevent the camera from deleting them. I've never actually used the feature myself (seems like too big a hassle), but I'd check that first, like faidoi said.

If that doesn't work, then reformatting it in the computer ought to do the trick. (For Windows, plug the card in, go to "My Computer," right-click the memory card icon there - it will have a drive letter and say "CanonEOS" I think -; from the drop down menu select "Format," then press "Start" and "Okay". It will take a few minutes depending on the size of your card.)

Formatting will remove even protected images.

If using the erase function then protected images will remain on the card. This is the option I use when I forget to reformat before I start a new shoot.
