well it is better than the 4.0 I predicted when I put the shot up, it is at 5.7

I have a feeling that the high scorer is going to be fairly low 6's

Seems there's a bit of grey area in the challenge details. ;-)

For me it was a shock to see so many B&W/desat entries. Seriously. My immediate reaction was that converting to B&W seems a bit of a cop out; an easy way of fitting the challenge without the difficulty of conceptualizing and shooting a grey subject.

Guess it goes without saying I interpreted this one as capturing the color grey (gray). I made a concerted effort to shoot a grey-in-color subject and can't help but feel less than rewarded given voting thus far (setting aside technical aspects, interest in subject, etc). Oh well.

Trying hard to work on my photography these days .. not an easy task when the tax man knocks on your door needing your time ;) I'm surprised at the no comments on this one.

Whatever Langdon had in mind, the original suggestor, soulman, was thinking of a colour picture :)

"I think we've had most of the other main colours as challenges before now and I thought to myself: What's one colour that's hard to make interesting? Grey. "

But, whatever was intended, we have what we have, which is open to interpretation. (dammit, cuz my grey-in-colour deserves more! lol)

Have you noticed that SoulMan has gone into the Witness Protection Program

But to the undiscerning, those of us who shot completely in grey without conversion are getting hit as well.

I feel I'm going to pretty disapointed when I see all those desat images finishing way ahead of me, oh well such is life.

There was no prohibition against conversion to a black and white image. The only conditional clasue sentence was .... "You should do your best to avoid extreme shades of gray (read: shades of black and white)". That doesn't mean take a color picture with some obscure element in gray. Nearly every photo has that condition. Furthermore, there are many images which are naturally in shades of gray. The challenge here was to capture a gray colored subject and avoid the extreme ends of the histogram. Mostly, I'm concerned that a group would vote in a block based on their "unique" interpretation.

IF you're speaking to MY comment, I just want to say that I would NEVER give anybody a 1 or even a 2 (and most likey never a 3). And I belong to no groups.
What I meant was that I believe color images work better for this topic and, therefore, I will most likely vote them higher. I gave the topic description alot of thought before posting my own color image of something I thought looked grey. I processed it and re-processed it several times and even tried desat. To get a good all-grey picture is HARD because, to me, what makes a photo interesting is some contrasting element. Black and white didn't seem to work well at all because, to me (again), you can't have good black and white photography without the extreme dark/light contrast.
So - I promise to keep an open mind and look at each image as it's own grey image, whether its in color or b/w but I can almost say for sure that the images that will work, for my eye, will be those in color. And NO LOW SCORES. Promise.
I don't want any so I'm sure nobody else does either.
When I'm finished voting (maybe tonight) I will post my stats.

Penny, this is just my 2 cents, but referring to your comment "I would never give anybody a 1, 2 or a 3", well - the voting scale is 1 to 10.

I use the voting scale in its entirety.

Each to their own, but never feel guilty about using the full scale: that is what it's there for! Giving out a 'low scoring' 1, 2 or 3 does not mean you are a troll, if you are using the scale for what it was intended for.

:)

this is the correct way for me too...

but, if i vote 1,2 or 3, i do not let the page without write a comment, i think that low scores needs a little comment on why for me...

this is important in order to increase our experience, or not?

I had 2 different thoughts when I read this challenge.

One was take a photo of something grey (like an elephant/horse etc).

The other, and the route I took - was to take a photograph of something that would still be interesting without any blacks or whites. This was because of the added in bit about keeping away from blacks/whites. On the colour challenges e.g. red - there was no 'capture the colour red, but do not include dark red or light red.

Therefore I took a shot, converted it to greyscale, and was sure to have no blacks or whites.

And here is my scoring:-

Not brilliant, but well up to my usual mediocre standard!

I will move on and create other masterpieces for all to enjoy. :) (on a positive note it is improving)

Now there will be 2 very disappointed DPC members! I suggest everyone go back and re-evaluate your scoring. It is apparent by these two comments that there has been a huge blunder with most voting. Go back, find my shot, and re-vote, it only takes a few seconds. :)

This challenge comes to mind as similar in nature to the current Grey challenge: Black and White in Color II
