I saw a really great set of exhibits at The International Center of Photography yesterday.

Anyone in or around the NYC tristate area should make a point of going.

Steichen's work is strong, incredibly well balanced. He rarely breaks the rules but it's nice when he does. Technically speaking ...I think he may have wrote the book and I forgive him for that (lol) but seeing the collection showed me how derivative most of what we do actually is. Also interesting is what a clear departure the rest of the Fashion images are from Steichen's work. There's a almost a complete abandonment from "the rules" he set. The contrast is amazing seen en masse, under one roof.

The Weird Beauty: Fashion Photography Now was another eye opener. If you think you understand commercial photography...beauty...think again.

The real gems were in the This is not a Fashion Photograph part of the exhibit. It really brought me down to size and showed me that no matter how much you search and dig up on the internet it doesn't come close to scratching the surface of whats out there.

We all need to get out more.

Bump.

I may go back with some friends at some point. If anyone's interested or is thinking of going let me know. I'm an 8 minute walk from the Museum and want to go back possibly for the tour, as well.
