I was wondering if anyone has the singh-ray variable neutral density filter and if so, how do you like it and is it worth the price of $340 USD.

I don't own one. You can pretty much do the same with a stacked pair of circular polarizers.

I seem to recall seeing this done once at a GTG - but doesn't it add strange colors to all the shots when the polarizers interfere?

I've heard good things about it, but nothing first hand - it's pricey.

I do the Cokin thing with a P153 - 4 stop ND filter and that's been enough for what I need (to get shutter below 1/250 in the sun for use of monolights or sometime to get 1.2 to 2.0 and keep shutter speeds in the range the camera can actually do.)

I don't see the need for 8 stops of light reduction except for a few specialist uses (like you want to do 30 or 45 seconds in broad daylight)
