This is not an entry but the 50-100 people who saw a print of this image all said the same thing which was simply that his personality couldn't have been better represented.

Richard Clay is a sax/trumpet player who is one of the warmest, hopeful, positive, peaceful, generous souls you could ever meet. Again, as people said that all comes through and without a title as a giveaway. That's the type of image I was hoping to see in the Challenge. Anything with genuinely deep energy, that wasn't posed or acted out would have hit home, for me.

Hey everyone,

First off, I'm not whining. I'm by no means questioning if this should be a sub 5.5 image, i'm curious to know why it IS a sub 5.5 image.

I have learned so much, so I'm just looking for some critiques from the group I guess :)

thanks!

Hey, Jerowe. Here's what I think.
-Hard crop around the faces would create a more clear focal point.
-The hilights are a bit harsh.
Other than that, I think it's a fine shot!

my 2 cents

hey everyone,

i just wanted to thank you all. i was not questioning my score, just wanting to understand it more and you helped me to do so.

i recalibrated my monitor last night and it did look quite a bit overexposed than it did when i edited it, plus i see a lot of the other suggestions that could have helped out.

that's why i joined this site, thanks so much for the thoughts on this image!

However, I don't understand the scoring here either. My submission for glasses has the lowest scores I have ever received (4.7703 at the moment), and yet is the only shot anyone has ever favorited. Go figure.

Same thing happening to me in the tree challenge! I got my first fav (for which I'm thrilled) and I'm getting KILLED in voting. Although, I don't fault the voters, my shot isn't great...

@jdroullard - I try not to take it personally since it's all so subjective anyway. And without feedback, it's impossible to know why people vote the way they do. Still, I love waiting for the new challenge and set out with as much enthusiasm each time a new one is announced :-)

I'm not sure how much this has been touched on by others, but here's my take on it:

The "subject" here is the faces, right? But everything else in the image is richer and stronger and maybe even sharper than the faces. That is to say, the sweaters and the background are both rich and detailed and inviting of our deeper scrutiny. The faces, by contrast, ser relatively washed out and insubstantial. It's hard to focus on them. Even harder because they are *sideways*, and in opposite directions to boot. So basically the image is a little schizophrenic, it's frustrating your viewers.

Check out this quick-n-dirty version, where I just used shadow/highlight to recover the faces, no other changes:

I could be wrong, but I'd bet something like this would have scored a fair amount better.

I think I'd also crop to a square, eliminating the hands. It would get closer to the idea of them pinwheeling around, adding a dynamic element. Right now, the light patches made by the hands pull attention towards the corners, away from the faces.

I didn't say it wasn't used! Geez, how many duct tape pics are there in "silence"...
