... to take my camera (and laptop) through airport x-ray machines? Also, what about tripods, do you need to check them through or can you take them on board? This is for travel to/from the USA.
Thanks in advance!

Take your camera and computer in your carry-on luggage. It's safe to pass through the machines.
As for your tripod, I'm almost positive they wouldn't let you take it on board, but I guess you could call the airline and ask!

It should be fine to take your camera and laptop through the xray, but I've found that they often request to see them working so make sure the batteries are charged. I doubt they would allow a tripod onboard, but I dont know for sure on that one. Someone posted the rules and regulations of carrying photography gear onto planes but I cant find it atm, if I do find a link to it I'll edit it into this post. |

If your tripod folded and was in a bag that was within the allotted dimensions of carry-on luggage, I don't see why you couldn't take it on board. Check the website of the airline you're flying on for dimensions and other info. |

All my equipment has worked fine through hand luggage x-ray. Supposedly main luggage X-ray is stronger however, which may cause problems.
At Newark, San Francisco and Boston (probably all US airports?) you have to take the notebook out of its case to have it x-rayed separately, so be prepared for that.
BEWARE - a colleague had her notebook stolen during such a procedure, which apparently is very common. She said someone got her out of order from her notebook by stepping in front of her in line, and when she came to collect it at the other end it was gone. |

Agreed with all the rest - there is a FILM problem going thru X-rays but almost never. It's mostly pros with money on the line who have to REALLY worry about even that. Digital cameras don't have anything for the Xrays to really affect, as far as I know. |

I hand carried my tripod on last year. I asked the people at the ticket counter since my bag was already checked and I left it with them, if I could hand carry my tripod.
the ticket agent walked me over to security and asked if it was OK and it was.
This was at the St. Louis Airport, not sure if others are so nice

I have had no problem taking my tripod on as hand luggage, mine is in a zipped cover case that came with the tripod. Laptops and cameras are fine through the hand luggage x-ray machines. The tripod has an unfortunate model name - 'bazzoka' - but it was only checked by x-ray machine.
