Hi all,

I'm into mid-distance running and endurance racing (10k, marathons, triathlons) and I'm wondering if anyone here shoots at these events. After any big race, there is usually a website you can go to to find professional pictures of yourself taken during the race (and purchase prints, of course :)

I am thinking about doing this on a smaller scale for Equestrian Events in my area. I have a good relationship with the community, so getting permission to shoot is not a problem, and I will be able to get good shots... but How do you handle all those pictures after the event is over? Is there a web service to allow event participants to log in to my website and buy prints directly?

Any other advice for this type of sports event photography?

Sooo, Any event photographers out there that do this kind of work?
Do you work for a company, like 'brightroom' - or by yourself?

Thanks again for any input :)

bump.

I shoot little league football.

The games are on Saturday. I get permission from the league to shoot "my team," then periodically, the announcer will announce where people can go online and buy them. I also have cards to hand out and a table set up with business cards, etc. on it.

I try to have the pictures up by the Tuesday after the game, at my smugmug site, and everyone can just visit there and order what they want. I am also available if they want to custom order stuff, but the bulk is through smugmug.

I used to do something similar, and also used smugmug.com for the purpose. It's pretty good, and useful. I know another photographer who uses photoreflect.com and then fulfills the orders herself; it's free to use, but they take a bigger chunk of the profit.

Depends...

The higher the tournament (state competion vs just another game at the home field) makes a big difference. You've run many races and some prolly more than once. Will you buy a pic from every race? Or just the NYC Marathon?

Same thing applies to the sports stuff. My assistant shoots this in a lower-level town (economically speaking) and few folks buy much and complain that $7 for a 4x6 is too much. But then if they want teh pic they'll spend whatever it takes. He's found the best sellers are the kids on the bench picking their noses (rather than the action shots). I've talked to the mothers in my area and they say the same thing - they'd rather buy a photo of him playing is DS on the sidelines with his buddies watching than making the game winning touchdown.

Secondly you can sell on site or later on teh web. Onsite is better - sell on emotion, immediacy, etc. But you need gear, space and a staff.

My one friend that shoots as a hobby in a more affluent area sells 3 pics on a CD for $20. Some complain it's expensive but he has answers for them on that. He feels it's not worth the time it takes to do a sale if the sale isn't at least $20. He claims to do pretty good. The parents pick the images from his site and email him what they want on disk.
