Looking to buy new monitor. The cheapest ones are between £90-£130 and I really can't go outside that sort of budget. I'm guessing that in that range there are a few reasonable deals and a lot of terrible ones, so I was just wondering if any of you in the uk had recently bought something similar and had any suggestions.
Just to clarify: I'm just looking for something with decent, even contrast, reasonably good colour and viewing angles. I'm not expecting any miracles.

Personally, I still like the CRT monitors. You can't go wrong with a tube, and offers the best bang for the buck.
If you go with a CRT, best to stick with an aperture grille monitor as they offer excellent brightness, contrast, and resolution. Stick with as high of a refresh rate you can afford to increase clarity and reduce eye strain.
NEC MultiSync brands are one of the best.
I got mine almost 3 years ago. Its an NEC MultiSync FE992, 19", 75Hz at 1600x1200 for $213 at buy.com.
The only problem with a CRT is that they are bigger and heavier. But, you will pay much more in a flat screen LCD for the same quality. I say that with the caveat that it WAS 3 years ago since I went monitor shopping. Technology and prices have changed since then. But, even if my monitor was to blow today, I would still look at a CRT long before an LCD.
But, if you can, see if your video card will support 2 monitors, or see if your computer will support 2 video cards. If so, I would get one very good monitor, and a second cheap one. Nothing is like having your photoshop tools off to the side!

Do they still make those? Just looked at two online computer vendors, Newegg lists one CRT, PCMall lists two CRTs. This contrasts with several hundred LCDs listed on both sites. |

Err....did I mention it was 3 years ago? :) Hmm....good point, you're right, I don't see many....
End of an era...too bad....I hate LCDs.
Wow...just went to the NEC site...nothing for CRT..... :( < sobbing >

I have a 20" NEC AccuSync LCD203wxm. Resolution is 1680x1050. It does pretty good and cost me $200 last April. I think that should fall within your budget.
Looking at the current sale flyer from Fry's, prices on similar monitors appear to have dropped $30-50 since then. (Not sure what the current exchange rate is)

I have a Phillips Brilliance 200W which I love, i think it's 20.1" but I don't think it's a current model though. On my desktop side by side is a Fujitsu-Seimens L55 which is very poor in comparison in terms of colours, contrast etc. I have both set at 1680x1050 which is a nice resolution to work at.

Thank you all. I'm going with an LG W2242T 22 inch widescreen, purely for price and size, though I hear its colour is pretty good, but it has some contrast issues. I still have an iiyama 17 inch crt which will be used as a second monitor for proofing when and if desk space allows. Moreover, if the colour and quality is an issue, I'm fairly sure my family will be happy to swap their viewsonic 17" professional lcd, for mine next time I go home.
The main reason I'm buying it, is that I'm doing a lot of reading on the computer right now, and the crt has developed a couple of problems that make it pretty tough on my eyes.
I'll let you know how it matches up to the crt.
