I know a lot of you have this lens and I purchased one today. I'm awaiting its arrival and pondering how you all take care of the lens? Usually I buy a UV filter and place it on the lens for protection, are there alternatives other than handling gently? Also, because I have never used gelatin filters what are some good ones to get for this particular lens, what brand, etc.? Do you still have a UV gelatin filter for general purposes? I would have asked this before buying but the lens was out of stock at B&H so I didn't take any chances and bought it from Adorama. Plus I need the lens ASAP. Thanks.

You just have to be careful, the built in hood provides some protection, but there's still a nice hemisphere of glass there.

You can use 82mm filters on the front if you only remove the center part of the lens cap (you'll see what I mean when you get the lens), but you will have vignetting at anything wider than about 15mm. 82mm filters are quite pricey too.

Kodak Wratten gelatin filters are excellent, but also quite expensive. A 3"x3" ND filter is about $50. You will need to cut them down, but they are easy to mangle, so you should almost think of them as a consumable rather than an investment. Since the gelatin filters go on the back of the lens behind the rear element, they don't do anything to protect the front element of the lens.

I love my 12-24, and it has some great features, but ease of filter use is not one of them.

I think it's almost easier to just buy them and as soon as you get them crumple them up and throw them in the trash. Much less frustrating that way. :)

Thanks, I guess I'll be extra careful. I just got the lens and I'm going to take a couple shots in a bit.
