Folks, Am new to photography and been going it alone for a while. Wanted to join this community to learn from others and improve my skills but find myself limited by budget on software.
Was going to rely on freeware to give me the kickstart and, going through old posts, have seen 3 programs get recommended repeatedly: Irfanview, Paint.net and GIMP. Which would you go with? Understand GIMP is the most complete [ackage but wanted to make sure it would be worth the time and effort to learn to use if I would then have to switch to PSP or CS3 anyways.
Your perspectives (as well as any alternative recommendations) would be most appreciated. |

Paint.net and Gimp both have user interfaces similar to Photoshop or PaintShop Pro. I messed with Irfanview a few weeks ago while helping someone else with a problem and it is a different type of application in the way it works. Very good for basic adjustments, but does not have a lot of the features that a full fledged editor has. I think Either Gimp or Paint.net would work fine for you, and the transition to PS or PSP would not be difficult. There is an add-on for GIMP called GimpShop that is supposed to make it emulate PhotoShop. Don't know how well it works, though.
Also keep an eye on Giveaway of the day, they frequently have freebies of image editors and photography related apps, but each offering is only freely available for 24 hours.
