So it's snowing today, here in Jacksonville, NC...not a normal thing for us. I love snow and have the day off so I went out to take pictures hoping to find a nice one for a challenge. I get to my location, erase all my cards and get ready. Take a few test shots and suddenly notice a red line going most of the way down all my images.

crop of image

I turned it off and on, changed lenses, did a pixel mapping, went to cleaning mode and looked at sensor and nothing helps.

So what's the verdict, is my camera done? Is it possible to just replace the sensor? I am able to take pictures and since it is more to the right of the sensor, if I frame them right I can crop out the line but how fricking annoying.

Any help is very much appreciated...thanks in advance.

That really sucks. Not a camera technician (is it sensor, a board, a chip, god knows), but certainly it's off to the repair shop with it.

Looks like a sensor defect. You'll have to take it in to get fixed, unfortunately. I don't really know the going rate for sensor repair these days, so you'll have to take it in somewhere to get a quote.

My guess is that the edge contact that matches up with that line is dead, and that that line of pixels is one that houses only blue and green pixels - so when the Bayer interpolation is done there's only red there. Sucky.

My other guess is the sensor's toast - these things are designed for replacement rather than repair.

you mean the sensor being replaced or the entire camera...I'm hoping just the sensor but not sure how this stuff works.

Yeah, I meant replacement. I just use repair as an umbrella term. You should be able to just get the sensor replaced. If the camera is still under warranty, contact Olympus.

I also think that your sensor may be fried. I would try removing the battery for a while, then a full reset. There may be something about doing the reset in the manual. I would also try a different memory card. I wonder if the cold outside has something to do with the problem? Try a shot or two in a warm place after the camera warms up.
Wishing you well with the outcome and/or repairs. It may be a good time to upgrade anyway.

Melon offered some good advice here. Try a few of those options and if those don't clear it up, contact Olympus Support. They have good people working there and their turn around time for diagnostics and repair is quite remarkable.

Hope all goes well.

Thanks for all the info and ideas. I got a hold of one of the official olympus repair sites, it isn't under warrenty...well now that I think about it, I need to find that paperwork, I might have gotten the extended...anyway they say about $195. so not too expensive but still a bit more than I can afford right now. I am about to retire from the Navy in May and my wife said that my family has asked what they can get me for a gift...she's gonna tell them a new camera...YEAH! In the mean time I'll try and frame my images so I can crop or at least clone it.

(btw would this be too big of a thing to clone out in advance editing? I'll have to contact SC if the necessity arrives.)

Thanks again for your info and ideas.
