For those who have upgraded from cropped sensor to a full frame sensor, is there a noticeable difference in image quality?
I've been doing research and from everything I have read the full frame sensors produces better quality images. I'm trying to justify the extra money to getting a 5D/D700 instead of a 50D/D90.

Been shooting small frame for 6 years, went 5D last week.
Lower noise at higher ISO on a FF - even a 3 year old 5D beats a 40D and the 50D too.
The viewfinder is brigter as the mirror, mirror box and all that is bigger.
I've not shot a wedding yet to know if low light focus is any different.
DOF is 1 stop narrower (all sorts of debate as the reasons for this but reality is - its thinner)
As most things, under ideal conditions there is little difference from one to the other - ISO 200 at F8 they all look good. ISO 3200 at 1.2 seperates the FF from the wanna be's.
But you can pick up a used 5D for the same money as a new 50D so it's tempting - it's partly why I did it. But you need FF lenses - good ones, as the corners will now be used and if there's softness or vignetting you'll see it on a FF and not on a crop body. So there will be other costs beyond the body...
I use a 10-22 on my crop body, can be had used for $550 (saw one today for that price). The used 16-35 I picked up last week was $950. But the 15mm fishey is awesome on a 5D and barely fishy at all on a crop body - so you get some things with a FF you can't buy at any price on a crop body.
And as all women know (and won't admit to any man) size matters. :P

thank for the comments. i guess going full frame is the best way to get the best image quality. now it's a matter of which full frame camera. "sigh" more research! |
