Deb's new one. Nice work! Do I detect a touch of Topaz or am I seeing things?

There isn't a formula in that sense, but there is a gestalt. Or let me say it this way, IF there is a gestalt for what works on DPC, there is also one for 1x. If there isn't one on DPC, then you could argue the same for 1x. I think my point is that 1x is similar to DPC in many regards, but the "rules" (ie. the gestalt) are different. |
DrAchoo...you mustn't frighten me with words like "gestalt"...I do believe that DPC does have a formula (which Yanko guards the sacred knowledge like the High Priest of Amun). But, 1x appears to target quite a different audience.
The perspective of 1x appears simultaneously...narrower and broader. (Is there a pretty word for that?!)...;-)
P.S. Pawdrix...has used the word that must never be said..."BORING"...::promptly faints::

Yeah, I've been on a bit of a Topaz kick of late. I never edit a whole lot so lately I've been going a wee bit too far (at times) in the other direction. But I liked the way it worked with that shot. I think I also put a B&W layer over it and reduced it to take down the vibrance a notch. I'd have to check my notes.
Pleased to see that one go through. As someone who truly enjoys street shooting, I was tickled pink to catch that scene.
Oh, and Steve? I'm here through December. I live a 30 minute train ride from Frankfurt, and that's the slow stops-everywhere train.

When I went from Muenster to Frankfurt on my way to Prague, I took a train down(up?) the Main/Mein or some river and passed a ton of really cool looking Castles with vineyards on the way. It was a very slow train and one of the coolest unexpected pleasures I've found traveling Europe. One question...where the hell was I?

This photo was a reject and I thought it had a good chance to make it. One of my favorites as the light fell the way it is shown. Interesting though, as I had only edited the DPC version at 800 pixels I went back and re-edited the photo for 1x. Probably because of this thread and everyone trying to "figure out what gets in" I overdid the edit. It is kind of funny when there were much fewer DPC folks over there, I used 1x as a barometer of what people thought of some of my better entries. If it made it in, I knew it would do well, it is how I picked my Master's FS entry. I had two other photos I thought were great and were quickly dismissed so I kept trying until something was selected. But now I wait until after voting to try since so many people stop by and look in both places. I don't buy into the over moody monotone image will give you a leg up on getting in any more than using HDR on every image will get you a ribbon here. Just my two cents. Anyhoo, here is my reject with the DPC version and 1x edit.
1x edit of this
Here were the reasons given, I think I overestimated this image since it was not very popular anyway. Screening popularity looks to be around 20%
Comments given
* Foreground too dark
* I think the falloff in the lower corners is a bit much. I want to see the road lead into the image more.
* badly pasted sky
Of those who voted against your image, four indicated that there is a problem with composition, four noted impact as a weakness and three selected exposure as a reason for not publishing the image.
The one that bothers me is the "badly pasted sky" since the sky is not pasted at all, haha. But I wonder if that would have swayed them anyway.
ETA: Thought I would toot my horn for just a sec, as I had two photos on the popular today section at the same time last week! I know it is kinda silly, but I was more excited than I expected when I saw it.

I do love that shot, Joe. The light is simply incredible. And note that you've got freakin_hilarious' shot between your two shots - kinda nifty! I think I see one from Jennifer Short there, too. |

Joe-FWIW, I find the comments there equally stoopid as they are here or anywhere else for that matter. I wish I could turn them all off. I do like the cheerful greeting and to know when people connect but otherwise they can save the rest. It's not like I would change a single thing based on what they say anyway.
As ubique said somewhere, to paraphrase "there are plenty of people out there that have nothing to say but insist on saying it"

Steve, you were most likely on the train that I take to and from Köln (Cologne) which runs along the Rhein river. That stretch is indeed gorgeous and there are castles all along the way. |

I didn't think I was anywhere near the Rhein. Again, it was a train from Munster to Frankfurt...are you sure about the Rhein?
If it was the Rhein that would be very, very cool. It was stunning, especially as the sun went down. It was a DPC fiery, Martian, nshapiro, Bear_Music, red/orange, but for real. ;P

I did a quick check of the map. I went to Münster by train and I had to change in Köln, so I suspect you probably went that way back as well. And I believe the river that runs along that route is the Rhein. It meets up with the Main (which runs past Frankfurt) in Mainz, of all places. |

Certainly one thing to LEAVE out the formula is borders, especially our rather popular wide top/bottom variety... THEY HATE IT..... It was even mentioned as reason for one of my recent rejections....!

Awww...that's good to know. My photoshop skills are limited and I don't know how to create fancy border anyways so that IS A RELIEF! I do however usually add a thin white/black border to separate my photo from the darker background of the 1x background. DPC doesn't really require that separation as much due to the grey background. |

Hmmm...gosh...my poor little camera is just a conundrum.
I'm going to have to borrow Ursula's camera! The bigger Nikons come with the 1x button! ;-) |

The link doesn't work. You probably need to post it to the critique section for others to see it, or upload it to you portfolio here. |

Size?
I'm realizing as much as I love the larger sized images it's easier to get/steal a good small print from the larger files. Genrerally, I'm not that hardcore about that stuff but I'm selling a print of Sexy Soul and wanted to direct the buyer to 1x just to let him see some of the work in a larger format and then thought twice about it. Slight distrust...probably not too healthy but what can I say?
How are the chances of getting things published at 750-800 px (long)?
I also realized after seeing some of the recent Street work published I may have at least 4-5 images that I didn't think were hugely strong but could be perfect if the B&W conversions are super tight. It seems that rich conversions put things over the top.

Nice. I like this kind of stuff because I've never seen anything like it before.
Now, what the hell is it? |
