I guess I will throw my mashed potatoes.
This is what I think and I am no big stock photography teacher. I think pictures of dark old pans with cooked food in them are ugly. Most of us dont have culinary school kitchens or pots.
I think pictures with people cooking food are ugly to unless they are all in white chef uniforms and using nice shiny new stainless steel pans (or you have a very creative picture).
For stock buyers maybe they really will want cooking pictures. For those here that are voting and entering I think we just wanted to see a good looking picture of food and this is why most of the pictures are of just food and not cooking. The description also used the word (food) and this gave us the road we were looking for. I really just think that is all there is to it. I dont have anything cooking in mine. I tried but I was turned down at the Chinese Restaurant. Hahahah.

Enough debate :)
It is a SCORES thread after all...
I'm sitting at 5.8571 after 126 votes... Been climbing and have not seen a "1" on mine, though it could be in the mix I'm sure. |

This site never ceases to amaze me as far as the scope and sequence of arguments. I swear some of ya'll could (and would) argue about ANYTHING>
My cooking shot is holding around a steady 5.7 -- which is fine with me considering it was just a snapshot that I took and only later decided to put it in. |

This thread is much more exciting than the business person thread! I agree with pawdrix and toddhead. When I first saw the challenge I just read "food" and instantly had a great idea for a stock photo for food. I went back and read the challenge description again and it hit me that my idea was just the ingredients and no prep so I had to ditch it. I think it is pretty clear that the challenge was to depict cooking. I just finished voting:
Stats: You have rated 89 of 89 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.9326.
I gave out a pretty decent average, and I think some of the shots with no one actually cooking were successfully done. To me they showed an interesting method of cooking without the cook.
I also find it rather funny that I received a DNMC comment from HawkeyeLonewolf for my business person stock and it is scoring 6.6439. If Hawkeye can find the art of cooking in some of these ingredient snaps I find it amazing that he can't find the business person in my shot :) Why is your interpretation of "stock cooking" so much more open than "stock business person"? I do appreciate your comment and find it helpful, I just think it is funny.

Your exact words were "fails to meet theme", so I guess technically you didn't say DNMC LOL. It is no big deal and I do appreciate the comment and vote and you were exactly right with your analysis of the photo...I just thought it was funny that you are defending a "loose" translation of the food challenge and a "strict" translation of the business challenge.

I have got to stop entering just for the sake of it and put more time into editing. |

My score has fluctuated wildly over the past 2 days. Weird. Oh well, better luck next time. I've officially started learning things from this site, so it can only go up from here. |

I guess where I feel I'm consistent here is that I'm looking at the plain and mainstream understanding of the theme.
While your guy is "in business", that is not what comes to mind when someone reads "business person" -- especially with stock photography.
Likewise, while cooking can be as pigeonholed as pawdrix wants to make it, a plain reading of the challenge clearly would include all aspects of cooking.
So, I don't think I'm being loose on cooking or narrow on business person, but right on for both :) |
