Strictly technically, how could a beauty dish create a different look than a similarly-sized reflective umbrella? Aren't they essentially the same thing?
Please make an idiot of me, I really want to understand why they're so expensive. |

Honestly I don't know a technical answer to your question, but I do know (or feel) that BD catchlights are much nicer than umbrella catchlights. |

How so? Aren't they still just circles? |

I did a quick google search
In terms of catchlights, they are ring or donut shaped as compared with umbrellas. There is an opaque center portion in a beauty dish. |

I bought a beauty dish from Alien Bees, One thing I know that I like about it compared to umbrellas is sometimes you will get reflections of the umbrella in peoples glasses or another reflective item in your photo with the beauty dish you get a softer light more along the lines of a softbox and the umbrella reflection is not a worry. |
