I recently purchased a LaCie (Sunday) hooked it up and for the past 3 nights (never before) I have had complete computer shutdown...black screen of death. No warning, battery power is fully charged, hooked to power, the past 2 nights I was working on PSE7 (can't say what I was working on the first night for sure...) I have to wait for a few minutes, then I can power back up (of course I have lost all my work...drat) tomorrow I am calling tech support...but I was wondering if this sounds familiar to any of you at all...any input would help.

Hi Janine,

A couple of questions for clarification:

- What is a LaCie? I presume a brand of laptop?
- If you purchased it Sunday and have had trouble for the past three nights, isn't that every night you've owned it?
- So it simply shuts down while you're using it? What are you doing when it shuts down? Any chance you've inadvertently hit the power button or closed the laptop lid slightly? Are you actively working on it when it happens, or have you left it alone for a while? Does it go through the "Windows is shutting down" screen, or instantly go from on to black?

A LaCie external hard drive?
We need some specific info.

The LaCie is a external portable hard drive...I have been editing photos the last 2 night...not sure about the first night...there is no power button. Right now I have it disconnected and tomorrow I will experiment and see if it shuts off while I am working again...just wondered if anyone else had had a problem like this....

this is the only change to the computer (that I am aware of)

Is it powered by usb plug or external power plug?

is the USB connector the "Y" shaped type?
sometimes when an external drive draws too much power from the host computer, it causes a power surge.
that may have been the cause of your shutdown issue?

there is no Y to it...straight cord...has a USB on one end and a smaller thing (good description) like what I hook up my camera to when I am downloading...but a power serge sounds right...but we can't figure out why...I am just working away and click...it is dead as a horse.

I've used nothing but LaCie drives for decades now, both desktop and mobile units. I still use a triple interface Rugged. Of all LaCie drives, one (d2) failed after about four years of use. My experience with LaCie has been very good, although I understand the company actually only makes the enclosures.

In order to attempt a troubleshoot, it would be helpful, if you listed all hardware, connections, drive formatting options and relevant processes, clearly and specifically.

That's what I was thinking.

If you can plug the LaCie into its own power supply, it should do the trick. USB connectors have a limit on how much power than can deliver and you're probably overloading the connector. Alternatively, use a powered USB hub to provide additional juice to the drive.
