For those interested in quantitative (NOT emotional brand war like argumentative) sensor comparison, here is one source of data.

I found this to be a good tool FWIW.

ETA: Please keep this thread informative and lets not make it an argument thread. This is a great tool that may be of help to some.

Prash you can pick the numbers all you want about any camera, any brand or anything that you wish. To me those DXO numbers dont mean squat to me. And in reality I dont think they are a true test of the camera. Here is a photo from the very first version of the 1 series camera, yes the original 1D 4MP battery eating dinasour, taken at 1250ISO, straight out of camera not even rotated. If you compare the 1250ISO of this camera to the ISO 200 shot you posted in your other thread and then compare the DXO site numbers on the two cameras(which cant be done as they dont even list the original 1D) which is suppose to be terrible on noise, look at the two side by side and tell me which is better to your eyes. Then go find what the internet says about these two cameras. You will find everything you read on the internet isnt always true. That is why I dont let the internet chose my camera I let my eyes and experience do it.

This is a processed shot from that same sequence, but processed.

I agree I am not experienced enough to warrant sensor quality comparison just based on that, and I also agree that the sample you showed displays excellent noise control. Further, I am not questioning your judgement either. My points are simple:

- A 4MP sensor will have more pitch per pixel area, suggesting better noise control
- I dont even want to imagine comparing a 1D sensor with a consumer level camera sensor (D90)
- I am not experienced enough with DSLRs to make the best use of any body you give me. I bet I will give screwed up results even with a 1D if you lend me one for a day.

Given all this, I would make use of the simple knowledge I have, which is:

- I would compare sensors with similar pitch and fabrication type (e.g. CMOS), so I would compare D90 with a 50D for example, to make sure I am comparing apples to apples. I dont have loads of money to buy a 1D, so I wont even look at that option.
- Agreed that experience helps the most in choosing a camera body. And I did choose to switch based on my little experiences and my needs that a D90 better serves. Not everyone has the same needs. Right?

I like this discussion. I dont know about you, but I will definitely end up learning some new things!!
