I am expecting to print a number of photos for framing. Looking at Mpix.com I see that I can order the prints on foam core or matboard. I have only ever used foam core, but it is much more expensive than matboard. Is there a difference I should care about? |

If you are interested in archival or conservation framing, then you should stay away from foam core. There is no such thing as an archival foam board.
I assume that you're aware that what you're talking about is permanently mounting (gluing) your prints to one or the other? For myself, I prefer to mount my photos with a standard hinging technique which allows you to replace the mounting board or mat when ever it's necessary or desired.

To clarify, this may no longer be true. I've seen several products advertised as "archival foam board".

Thanks Michael, I appreciate that input.
I am still debating what to do.
I want to have two options:
1. The photograph mounted on a backing that looks good without any frame
2. A framed finished product
Local competitions and coffee-house galleries are asking that photos be mounted on a white board, but when not being publicly displayed, I would like them to be hanging in a frame. |
