I'm thinking about getting one but was wondering what you use the USB ports for? I heard the controllers are wireless. I'm trying to decide if i should ebay an older one with four, or just get a new one with only two. Backwards compatibility isn't a huge deal to me I don't think, so I just need to know about the usb ports.

Thanks!

Like crayon says, the USB ports are used to charge your wireless controllers. The controllers can also be used attached to the ports if your battery runs out and you can't stop playing :)

I think you can also used them to plug in memory sticks with media to play on the PS3 and other such uses, but I've never tried it.

I see. Well then I guess I don't really need four. I have a PS2 that's still kicking so the backwards compatability isn't a huge deal.

I might be getting one soon!

Some accessories, i.e. the Rock Band instruments (including the wireless ones), as well as the EyeToy all require USB ports. If you're getting Rock Band, make sure you either get the PS3 with 4 ports or get yourself a USB hub; otherwise you'll probably end up short.
