I've now voted on 70% and I'm surprised how many do not meet the challenge. The challenge was to have a subject the other side of a transparent object and I'd estimate about 40% fail to do this. |

Agreed. I also think a few got "reflection" confused with "transparent". |

Ping-ponging back and forth across the magic 6.0 line. The suspense is killing me, but it's preferable to my usual ho-hum scores. Everybody seems to be voting in this one, but Asia rolls over in only a couple of hours.

I agree that there appears to be a wide interpretation of this challenge based on the photos, but challenge descriptions are always interpreted differently by different people ΓΆ€“ and can also be interpreted differently by the photographer and the voter. This particular challenge description was written pretty straight forward: "Create a photo in which a transparent or semi-transparent object is between you and your subject." But what can differ here in interpretation is 'your subject'. As an example, a ball on the other side of a piece of glass would be an obvious fit to this description ΓΆ€“ the glass being the transparent object and the ball being the subject. But what about an image created by refraction of light, or the reflection of light ΓΆ€“ which is viewed through a transparent object ΓΆ€“ does this not still fit the challenge? The image formed by the refracted or reflected light now being the subject? |

There was one image I voted on that I think will get killed with DNMC votes for being reflection instead of transparency, but when I thought about it, there was a less than obvious transparency. |

If it's viewed through something transparent (other than air) it would be fine in my book. |

Not to sound too blunt, but to the troll who just gave me a 1 maybe check your glasses and the challenge requirements. My submission meets the challenge, as backed up by the comments and the great scores I have received thus far. My question is...for what reason do these people score like this???? Is it to boost their own place in the rankings or just because they simply have no idea at all. This "competitive" style will probably never be curtailed but I hope by outing these types it might make them re-think their motives for participating on such a site. As for the bona fide members, keep up the good work...I am learning lots since joining, and am happy to be a part of such a great community.

Haha, I had the same feelings during the last challenge. If it's any consolation individual votes make almost no difference to your final score. However, I'm sure that with a low score from him/her you also got a really good comment to help you improve? No, thought not.

Very rarely will you find out. I believe most of these people who vote decent shots as 1's don't even participate in the forums and will never have a clue. Occasionally an active member will give you some kind of clue as to why they lowball a vote, but it's rather infrequent.
Some examples of possible reasons for lowball votes:
-Making a statement about something they feel is unacceptable (The nudes in the "all I want" challenge for instance)
-Even though it is good, it does not appeal to them, and they vote on a scale of don't like<-->like rather than bad<-->good (A subtle distinction, but one that makes a difference)
-They do not see the relevance to the topic and they will only give the lowest possible vote to a DNMC

I'm going to start a small side business. For a modest fee, my wife will evaluate your potential challenge entries. All you need to do is to enter the one she doesn't like. You will be assured a good score using this patented method. |

Hey yospiff I'd subscribe to that one lol
To carry on the low voting theme, I've been monitoring my score that hovering around the 5.9 mark and have calculated that the last voter just gave me a 1 arrgh.
Now I have no problem with this except that if you are going to allocate a 1 then you must either have strong feelings about the image in which case please make a comment saying why you feel it deserves a low score or they
are voting low for other perhaps tactical reasons. |

Me thinks the latter in these cases, especially when the low votes are not backed up with a valid reason. But hey, I'll put up with the inconsiderate few, they are far outweighed by the benefits and knowledge to be gained from this insightful community. |
