I know this is a subject that has been rehashed, most likely, dozens of times, but here it goes again. I understand the idea of meeting the challenge, but as someone whose entries have pushed the challenge topics a bit I have a tendency to give some leeway on what meets the challenge. The idea of an image being somewhat subtle or even obscure seems to garner it far more 1 votes. I tend to look at the image first, then if it is to far outside the challenge, even for my liberal voting, I will subtract a point or two. I rarely give 1's as I feel only really poorly done shots deserve them, ie out of focus, poorly lit etc. In the same vein, I infrequently give 10's, though more than I do 1's, as a photo must be really outstanding to get a 10. I have recieved 1's on some of my entries, my photos were not even close to being the best submitted, but by no means were they outright bad photos. The voting page itself has the scale:
(BAD) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 (GOOD)
What is it that prompts you to give a photo a 1, a 10? I gave my reasons above, just curious what others here think.

Do I like the photo or not.
I don't care about technical stuff. The better I think the photo looks, the higher I score it. Often the technical things will help the photo look better, but I don't give or take points for technical things. If theres a picture that I really hate, but it is nice and sharp, I don't see why I should give it any extra points for being sharp, because I still don't like it.
If I don't think a photo meets the challenge, I change the 1-10 scale to a 1-5 scale. A photo worthy of a 10 which doesn't fit the challenge will get a 5, etc.

Basically I agree with this....
If I don't think a photo meets the challenge, I change the 1-10 scale to a 1-5 scale. A photo worthy of a 10 which doesn't fit the challenge will get a 5, etc. [/quote] |

Same here. But I would really like to see additional scales introduced, which would give more feedback without writing comments.

A voter is always right no matter what strategy he/she chooses to rate an image.
The diversity of opinions of a general audience is the strength of this site.

| Around the first of this year I started making a conscience effort to use the whole 1-10 scale. There is a best and a worst entry in every challenge so I try to give at least one 10 each time, often several. First time thru I vote most of the pics a 4, 5, or 6. On second viewing I go thru the 6's and upgrade until I have at least one 10, two 9's, three 8's and four 7's. Usually there are more at each level. I look thru the 5's to see if there are any better than average that I overlooked. My second look at the 4's group is pretty brief but sometimes moves a few to 5. I usually end up with a few 2's and 3's that have obvious/avoidable technical flaws and/or are off topic. About half the challenges present me with a 1, which may be a very poor quality photo, an incomprehensable subject, or a subject which is extremely or intentionally offensive. I sometimes give an extra point or two to what I perceive as a creative idea held back by camera limitations. And I will take away points from images that I think have been edited to the point of looking unnatural. Some techniques, or styles of photos, that I don't like almost always suffer at least a one point penalty. But most of all it all comes down to "How well do I like this photo?". |

| I tend to agree with others who change the scale to 1-5 for photos that donĂ¢€™t meet that challenge. It is rare that a photo that does not meet that challenge is so outstanding that I will give it a 5 but there have been a few. If a photo is a snap shot and clearly does not even make an attempt at meeting that challenge then I will vote it a 2 or maybe a 3 if it is a good snap shot. I donĂ¢€™t like giving out 1s because I get the feeling that some people are seeing how low of a score they can get. I have been trying to vote on all the photos but I am getting to the point where if I feel a photo rates a 1 it really does not rate a vote at all. |

so then if it meets the challenge, you score it on teh 6-10 scale?

For me if it meets the challenge it gets the full 1 to 10 scale. There are photos that clearly meet the challenge that also rate 1 vote. |

Just cos it meets the challenge, doesnt make it deserve a 6. I use the 1-10 scale if it meets the challenge.

I always start the picture at five.
If I like the image, then it scores higher.
If it doesn't meet the challenge or is a poor or "boring" image (in my opinion), then it will score lower.
As simple as that really! |

same for me, but the best in a challenge gets a 10, and a few get 9.

| Simple. Bad quality, off challenge, poor composed, hard to understand shots get 1,2,3. Shots that are good quality but don't tell me much or obviously are off challenge or stretch the challenge too far get 4,5,6. Shots that make me go "WOW" and are clearly on challenge and everything get 7,8,9. Then I go back and view my 9's sometimes 8's too and pick a few to become 10's. |
