here's two pics that I'm considering for the challenge of proportion..
can you please tell me which you prefer! [please]
The options are:
[1]
//removed
[2]
//removed
//edit: both pics removed, because apparently against an unwritten rule of the contest. Seriously only 2 people saw them, that's by no where enough to rule me out.. (pleasE?? i'm a newbie.. you know.. lost and confused)

Well, now you have posted them, you can't use either!

Poor guy! They were good shots too!
My understanding is that in order to keep voting fair, pictures must remain anonymous. It's not posted as a rule anywhere on the site (that I can find) but it makes sense- say you have online friends here or some such, or someone gives you a nasty comment and you want to seek revenge, anonymous voting prevents this.
But now we all know who you are!
At any rate, I think that photo one is a closer representation of the challenge, but that photo two is a better picture. |

On the topic of unwritten rules...
When someone votes for our photos and leaves a comment, their user id tells us who left the comment. Sometime the commenter even tells you how (s)he rated your picture.
Very often the commenter asks questions about the picture. Should we be able to write back? Is there an unwritten rule about this too?
I haven't written anyone back yet until after the challenge voting deadline has passed. |

I'm not sure how many have seen this thread.. only two have applied, and the pictures were only up for a total of 16 minutes. Seriously.. now since that particular rule is not written and I'm a newbie, would it be that intolerable if I could still use one of the photo's in question. Seriously.. I've submitted one of them anyway.. how was I not to know of an unwritten rule. |

It's not a rule, so you won't be disqualified for entering them. However, those people who did see them may vote you lower for breaking the ethics of the site. I wouldn't worry tho, everyone makes mistakes, and not many people saw them anyway.

Well, I don't think I'll have anything to enter so probably won't vote on that challenge (can't remember the pics anyway :)
Welcome to dpc and good luck.

You can answer questions thru PMs during voting, and many people, including myself, do it. However it is illegal to try and sway the votes by saying "vote me higher!" or something like that in PMs. If you do that you could be suspended from the site. (This bit is in the rules)

So... I agree that you are probably right and that this is within the ethical boundaries of the site, BUT...
Since you are able to change your vote after you PM back and forth to the photographer... wouldn't that then be the same as showing your picture first? After all, the person that you just PM'ed saw your picture, voted and then commented. If you PM him, he will then know who you are AND have the ability to change the vote... I don't see how this is different than posting it in the forum, other than the masses sees it, not only the people you decide to PM...

hehe, you were not the first and definately won't be the last, you did however learn the fastest way to spark debate on this site - I love it.
I'm a newbie here too and learning all the time but am trying to make time to take pics rather than spend all day in here reading and looking at pics.

This is the main reason, and it's a very big difference. If they ask you a question, the chances are that they won't mind getting an answer. If you have people who really don't like you, then after seeing it's your photo they may lower their vote, but in that case I suggest don't send PMs to people who don't like you :P

Sounds reasonable. This will prevent it from being a popularity contest - but only in some cases... I still think that it should be totally anonymouos right until the end so people that do like each other doesn't vote vote higher after knowing who shot what.
If the DPC staff are not able to take the userID out of the comment, I think they should make an attempt to enforce no PM'ing by asking users to report it if they are being 'approached'. |
