I'm only a newbie here, and not a professional photographer.. but here's what I think anyway.. [but seriosly, I'm nobody to listen to]

btw, just a question: What is the climate/scenary like in Canberra atm? I'm in Sydney and thinking to go for a drive down tomorrow since it's a public holiday.

The first pic:
- OK It seems a little over-exposed in the bottom left, the leaves, twigs and crap that are floating in the water take too much attention away from the main subject. The shadow cast by the subject is also pretty unappealing. Basically the main subject doesn't POP out of the picture to make it special, nor does it really look like it's in harmony with the scenary. I know animals are tricky (that's mainly why I have few animal pics) but it's best to study them for a bit, think about various perspectives for a shot, the lighting, how to excentuate the animals features and what not. Basically for a start, maybe get a little lower to take the pic, coz from on top at that time of day, you get a lot of ugly shadows and general dwarfing of the subject.

The second photo:
Vast improvement here from the first. The lighting on the tail dulls down quite a bit (mainly coz of the bg colour), but I like this picture. To improve it, I'm assuming that you can't get much closer with the camera, so maybe think about the shot's composition. Maybe add a bit more grass, apply the rule of thirds or something just to make it a bit more harmonious. But otherwise, I like the pic, the birds pose gives it a cool dimension too.. :D

The last photo:
The subject (which I can just identify as the snaking tree thing), does not really stick out. The bg is just too chaotic, and the light coming through maybe a bit too strong (attention seeking). I'm not sure how to improve, I always have lots and lots of trouble with nature shots too.. One suggestion is possibly to take a shot early or late in the day, where the lighting is softer. and probably re-compose the shot differently. Sorry I'm not much help. But they're my thoughts regardless. :D

Thanks bored..

Comments much appreciated, and I agree with what your saying.

Canberra is really nice this time of year (Autumn), leaves just starting to turn orange, it makes for some nice contrasts. Worth a visit for sure :-)

To add to what he was saying, the background can be deemphasized by decreasing the DOF. When the background is fuzzed out the details of your subject are much easier to see. This would also help to see the difference between the leaves next to the tree with the vine and the background foliage.

But like he said, I am a beginner too.
