Thinking about this lens purchase to add to my Canon 17-55 2.8 IS which is what I currently use the most. I'd like something with a little reach to it. I'm was going to go for the Canon 2.8 70-200 IS, but am questioning the price value for my needs.

I have used the 70-200 on a few occassions, rented and borrowed, so I am aware of it's capabilities. I have not, however, used or seen the Sigma. Any experiences with the lens?

Thanks!

I cant help you with the opinion on the lens, never used it. But I do know it gets somewhat mixed reviews from the Fred Miranda users. There is also one going for $475 on the Buy/Sell boards if you want to save a bit of money(I am not vouching for the seller, nor do I know them) but ran across the listing.

Reviews

For sale listing

I know nothing of the optics on the Sigma 50-150 so I can't really say anything about that issue of your question. I will say that with the Canon 70-200 IS you will get 50mm more reach which is very nice but more importantly you get the IS. Some shots I've been able to handhold on my two lenses that have IS on the long end of the zoom and at slow shutter speeds are ridiculous, really the selling point imo. One other issue to take into consideration is that you may need to get the Sigma re-chipped for newer Canon bodies down the road. I've heard sometimes they stop re-chipping certain lenses, your canon will probably work on any canon EOS that comes out far into the future unless they come out with some new system, which your sigma wouldn't work on anyway. Love my copy of the canon 70-200 2.8 IS. Best wishes.

Just a quick note on this. This lens was just introduced this year. I dont think its even been available more then 6 months. To even bring up the idea of rechipping this lens for future canon is kind of out of the question unless Canon does something that makes every other lens not usable.
