Someone, Hokie, I believe was proposing a critical workshop for just a few people. The implication that this would take place off site at specified times. I would like to propose an alternate plan that would be less exclusive. It's Simple. Add a forum here that is specificly about how to criticque a picture. The mods or former winners select one or two pictures with simular problems. Some of their early work or maybe a newbie can volentier something, but anyway a picture that can be improved upon. The one who submits it does a criticque. Others can join in to counter or expand the analisys. Questions may be posed and hopefully answered. Finally suggestions even examples are made to show how to correct the problem. We could all learn a lot and it would be more spontainious and interactive than a flat tutorial.
A little bit of this happens spontainiously about every day. I'm just proposing that it happen under its own banner and in a more purposeful way.
In the interest of full disclosure I will admit my primary reason for posting here is to learn to better judge photos so I can judge my own.

Sounda like a great idea aelith. I would be very willing to allow the experienced photographers to run a critique on one of my entries. I think they would however have to do a bit of homework about the particular camera that was used to take the shot. It would be pointless talking about the use of shutter speeds, Dof or f stops if the photographer only has a point and shoot type camera. Would certainly be interesting tho ;-)

I agree. but rebuttle of course is allowed. Type of camera and exposure info sould be part of the introduction I would assume. And of course critique also means describing whats right and possible too. aelith

This idea has been discussed in various forms before, and it's a good one. The main problem that I see with volunteering, though, especially in a forum atmosphere, is that everyone would volunteer (that's why most people are here...to get comments, right? ;)) If everyone submits their photo to the critique forum, it's really no different than voting (or photosig, for that matter). Everyone would want the comments, but the number of submissions would be too great for people to really go in depth.

I think what may be more manageable would be if a few pictures could be picked from the results each week...randomly, or by a certain designated number ranking (maybe we could have random one from the top 25th percentile, a second 25th percentile, etc., or to be even easier, #25, #50, etc.) Link them to the homepage somewhere, and let people continue their comments from the voting. It would give people a chance to really go in-depth about the comment they may have left during voting, it would give the photographer a chance to respond with more information about the photo or certain questions they may have had, and it would give people a chance to see what others were saying so that they could have examples of critiqueing. It would provide an opportunity for those who didn't make the top 3 to get a little attention, and it would provide a more constructive use of time for those of us addicts who post about lightbulbs all day :)

i think kimbly's got something there. some predetermined way of picking a couple of the shots for further critique would be great.
