yup. Canon 550EX and a 420EX off -camera ... fired by the Canon ST-E2. I'm still waiting for 2 umbrellas and the back drop. I'll post some pics of my set-up when I get all of it.

Like Jacko, I'm using Canon speedlights mounted in the umbrellas with an ST-E2 on the camera to trigger them wirelessly. Quite a nifty setup.
I'd still like to get some studio strobes some day (probably some Alien Bees), but having no wires is really nice and seems to work quite well for right now. With studio strobes, you have to have an AC power cord running across the floor, up the stand, to each light, a long cord going from one strobe to the PC sync socket on the camera (the other light(s) are then triggered optically) and you have to adjust the lighting ratios by going to each light (unless you spend the money on devices that allow you to do all that stuff wirelessly, which increases the cost quite a bit.) But the big benefit (and it is a pretty big one) is the constant modeling light, which allows you to "visualize" the light and shadows. |

The benefits I see to the 550EX is that
1. It̢۪s set up for use with an external battery pack
2. More power than the 420EX
3. Manual controls on the flash
4. Can be used as a master to control off camera flashes
The cons are that it is
1. Larger in size
2. More expensive

Alright, that's good to see that there are other people in the exact same spot that I am in right now. Jacko--that is exactly what I am looking for. Although it's going to have to wait a month or so since I just dropped the cash on 550/new 50mm lens/backpack/filters and tripod. But hey, who's complaining. I REALLY want that backdrop sheet, though. I'm wondering if I could pick something like that up at a drapery shop. |

I did the same as Gordon. The reason to buy the 550 EX over the 420EX if you have the 10D is more power, full manual control and the use of slaves. You can control flash exposure compensation on the 10D, and I figured the 420 is as powerful as I'd ever need (which it is, even with my 70-200 and ranges in the hundreds of feet) and if it wasn't, I'd get the 550 and presto, I'd have a slave in the 420.

I picked the 420EX for the same reason in reverse :) I can add a 550ex as a master later if I find out I'm actuallying using flash much. |

Jacko--have you received your backdrop cloth yet? If so, how is the quality and was that person worth buying from? |

I got the 420 dirt cheap on ebay, I figuered that if I could ever justify needing to do a remote flash, that I'll be able to justify the 550 for the master.
I'm happy with the order I decided to use and wouldn't do it differently if I could... |

Feature-wise compatible with the 550EX - pricewise compatible to the 420EX

One difference to be aware of is that the AF assist beam (which is actually just a red high-contrast line pattern, it isn't "infrared" or anything) on the EF-500 DG will only work with the center AF point. |
