First set of dpreview challenges are open for voting.

I knew DPreview had a large, active community, but I'm still surprised to see they can support five simultaneous challenges and mostly reach the maximum of 500 entries each. Oddly, it appears that individuals can enter up to two photos for each challenge.

Anyway, at first glance (admittedly very brief), I'm impressed by the skills displayed.

Interesting. The challenge host provides an example photograph to illustrate their interpretation of the challenge subject.

For the 'Wrapped Up' challenge they have a photo of a baby wrapped in a blanket. There are an enormous amount of shots of babies in blankets entered!

Also, anyone can enter in as many challenges as they want. So there might be only 250 total entrants. :-)

You can also click on the images and see them original size (no pixel size limit and byte limit is very generous).

I am using ISP based email, but the dpreview registration process thinks it is web based and won't let me register for the site. I have tried emailing tech support several times but no one will respond. Too bad as I would like to contribute to the discussion forums.

Is anybody from DPC entering DPR competitions?

I've just looked through some of the challenges and a lot of the photos submitted are really old. One dated back to 2004! And only half of them are anywhere near the challenge topic. And you can see the other entries before the challenge submission deadline.

It's just so different to here it makes me feel uneasy looking at it!!

Did anybody mention already that they are backed by Amazon.com? I for one do not like any such website that has a big corporate backing. Money skews things.. and review is also a 'thing'... along with challenges. I dont like dpreview since the first time I requested an explanation on one of the reviews and they never got back.

Booooooo!

If you read the fine print you'll probably find that Amazon owns your images if you enter them. LOL

Despite my fear of change, I've entered a challenge on DPR. I'll let you know what happens.

I did notice that some challenges ARE time based, but that there doesn't appear to be anywhere to comment on photos.

No...you, the photographer, retain all rights to the photographs that you submit:

"We respect your copyright and your intellectual property.

By submitting your image to a challenge you agree to allow dpreview to host, link to, and subsequently display the image on our website in connection with the challenge you are entering, and we may continue to display the image even after the challenge has ended in connection with the challenge you entered or the challenge feature generally.

We acknowledge the copyright and ownership of the image remain yours, and you represent and warrant that you are the sole owner of all intellectual property rights in the image.

dpreview may disqualify your image if it doesn't meet the guidelines or rules of the challenge. dpreview reserves the right to remove any image at any time without warning.

I entered my first challenge on dpreview a couple of weeks ago. I must say the whole thing turned out to be major disappointment - okay maybe my photo wasn't great and maybe it didn't deserve to do better than in did, but I only got 8 votes and I think even the winner didn't get more than about twenty. In another thread here tonight, someone referred to the rollercoaster ride one's score takes for the first fifty votes, so how can one take results seriously when no one gets anywhere close to fifty votes?

I'll still look at their challenges for inspiration, but if I'm going to enter a challenge, I think I'll stick to this site. At least I know my score will have some meaning.

Not being able to use my Gmail account, which I have been using for all my email for years is very annoying. Now I have to try remember the login details for my ISP account :P

Does anyone know if the challenges have the seem limit of data as DPC (ie, photo needs to be taken in week of challenge), or can I enter anything on my hard-drive that meets the other rules?

Why can't you use gmail? I just created a new account there and used gmail, no issues at all.
