Is using exposure compensation the same thing as opening up or stopping down using your shutter speed and/or aperture? I have tried "testing" this out, but i can't seem to get a good sense on way or another.
Much thanks.

Yes. If you are on Av (aperture priority) then exposure comp changes your shutter speed. If you are on Tv (shutter priority) it will change your aperture. In manual mode you are your own "exposure compensation": you change aperture or shutter to put the needle where you want it. I'm not sure what exposure comp changes in full-auto mode, as I have never used that mode.

Whoa, let me add to that: if you are in Tv or Av and you "open up" the relevant setting, then the *other* setting just "closes down" to balance the new setting, and there is NO change to the exposure. Which is why we have "exposure comp" in the first place.

it's sort of the same. one stop up in exposure compensation will be the same as one stop slower on the shutter, one stop wider on the aperture, or one bump up on the ISO.
the difference is - if you don't want to affect the depth of field, or the speed of the shutter ( beacuse those may change the way the photo looks ) exposure compensation is the way to go.

thanks so much... I have really been shooting in Manual, and as Bear said, have been my own EC. But makes sense in the other modes.....
Thanks, again! |
