I thought I had a bunch of sensor dust in my shot, and i'm noticing some odd dots in peoples photos (specifically the out of focus areas). The dot patters seem to repeat.

Does the effect have something to do with this? Do I make sense?

I think it would be the other way around. Since it takes a wider aperture to accomplish bokeh, I think dust would be less noticeable. But I could be wrong.

I've got an OOF dust bunny (lens I think) in the upper-right part of this shot:

And it did repeat through many frames. It changed shape slightly with aperture (different blurring). But when it's blurred it's unnoticeable if the subject isn't a solid color. If you use f/22 or something, it'd be smaller but more defined, if that makes sense.

It would probably depend on how close you are to what you are focusing on. Something further away from the lens would make it less noticeable, like Jamie said, but something very close would move all that dust into the plane of focus. I would also imagine it would get a little worse the longer you have the shutter open. :)

I suppose it depends on where the dust is.

If it's on the sensor, the more bokeh, the less it's noticible & I imagine it's the same for dust in the lens...

I find any shot taken over f.11 can have noticible dust specs if my sensor is not clean. However, every now & then I get a huge one & that makes life kind of miserable.

The repeating pattern is unusual and doesn't sound like a typical sensor dust issue.

And yes, wide open any sensor dust is usually blurred substantially, sometimes barely visible at all - stopped down to f22 the sensor dust will be much darker and more concentrated into a small dot (or shape).

After the challenge it would be interesting to see some examples of what you're talking about. Or something non-challenge related you could post now.

I'll try to remember to come back here after the challenge to post what I'm talking about...
I was thinking it was sensor dust, maybe its just affected by what I was shooting also (the images I saw this on were similar to mine)

If it's repeated my guess is it's noise. This would especially be true if the pattern shows up in darker portions of the picture and if the darker portions had been made lighter in processing.
