Currently I have got the EFS 18-55 lens which I bought along with the Canon 350 D. Since I am using this lens most of the time, I wanted to know if I have to upgrade to a good walkaround lens, which would be the best one to go for. Also if I have to choose between Canon EF 24-70mm f2.8L USM and Canon EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM which one shall I go for.

the 24-70 f2.8 is quite heavy for a walkaround lens.

try the canon 17-85.
it only goes to f4, but it does have I.S.

Tamron AF 28-75MM F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) is an excellent walking around lens with great reviews. Just ask one of the 488 owners here. With the $600 you save, you could buy a fisheye, or most of a Canon 17-40L.

I second the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.

Thanks to you both. I hope it has got better contrast and sharpness than the 18-55 Canon lens that I got.

check the 488 owners link. For the price, it is a great lens. Even for more $$ its still a great lens. The only fault I have with it is its plastic body and the fact that, when you are in a hurry in the airport and don't close your backpack all the way, and you lean over to take off your shoes, it has a tendency to jump out of the bag and fling itself to the floor. Still works though. :)

You may want to check this site to compare side-by-side the sharpness of various Canon compatible lenses.

The 17-40 is basically glued to my camera.
