Since I'm still such a newbie both to DP challenges, and to this site, I'm in the wide-eyed panicked but elated phase. I read all the comments and set-up explanations as if they were Robert Ludlum novels. However, I have seen a puzzling phrase often used in the comments: feedback but "no vote".

I understand voting but not commenting, but would someone please explain the how, what, and why of leaving a comment but not voting?

Some people like to look through and possibly comment on the images in a challenge that they aren't going to vote on for some reason. Sometimes that reason is that the individual in question has an entry in the same challenge and doesn't feel he would be able to vote objectively. I'm sure there are other reasons too, I just can't think of any at the moment.

They might be pressed for time and know that they won't make it through the minimum 20% voting (which means their votes won't count), but a couple of images spoke to them as they quickly looked through the challenge.

As to the how -- I was here six months before someone told me how to do that.

Type your comment and then hit the ">>" instead of a number and your comment will be added with no vote. I'd always assumed that this would skip to the next photo with no action, but it enters the comment just fine.

I have no idea why people leave the note saying "Not Voting" but I guess it gives you some info when looking at the commentor average and nobody will send them a nastygram thinking they were given a "1" by the commenter.

i simply refuse to vote. I'm quite pleased with my 0.000% voting average, and the only way to maintain that is to refrain from voting (1 is the lowest score one can give)

Thank you all for your insights. This little hobby IS a bit of a black hole :-) It just seems that it takes longer to write a comment and add "but no vote" than to simply click on a number.

Thaddeus, you're just a voyeur :-)
