I just got this in email from Canon and thought I should share.

Dear Kat ,

Thank you for using Canon products.

It has been confirmed that counterfeit Canon lithium-ion batteries and chargers for Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders are in circulation. In addition, it has been reported that counterfeit batteries have been considered the cause of some battery ruptures.

In many cases, counterfeit batteries and chargers are not equipped with protective devices required to meet international quality standards. Therefore, when these batteries or chargers are used or charged, they can cause abnormal heat or leakage, ignition, rupture and other malfunctions in the batteries, chargers, and digital cameras and video camcorders. There is concern that, in the worst case, not only could digital cameras and digital video camcorders be damaged, but fire, burns, blindness and other severe accidents could occur. Thus, to ensure customer safety, we urge our customers not to use counterfeit devices.

Please be advised that Canon is not responsible, and will not be liable, for any malfunctions, damages or injuries caused by non-Canon genuine lithium-ion batteries and/or battery chargers including, without limitation, counterfeit devices.

Recently, both in Japan and overseas, counterfeits of Canon's genuine lithium-ion battery packs and chargers have been frequently offered for sale on the Internet. Accordingly, please use caution when purchasing Canon lithium-ion battery packs and chargers on the Internet to ensure that they are genuine Canon brand.

Canon's genuine lithium-ion batteries have security labels on their packaging that identify them as genuine Canon products. When purchasing battery packs, please refer to this information. (See the following image for the labels.)

Good information.

Don't confuse counterfeit batteries with third party batteries though.

I guess canon is getting mad that people can buy the same battery for $10 from a third party rather then $80 from Canon.

I've used batteries from sterlingtek for years and never had any heat or leakage issues. i know several others that use them and never heard of any of them having an issue.

Furthermore, the battery is identical to my canon battery, including tooling marks on the plastic casing! I'd bet a good sum of money both batteries were made in the same factory, one shipped to canon, one shipped to sterlingtek.

But does it claim to be Canon? They're not talking about 3rd party which may very well, as you suggest, be made by the same factory, but rather about cheap knockoffs claiming to be Canon but not produced to their standards and harming Canon's reputation.

I just got the email and that is what it sounded like to me -- beware of batteries claiming to be canon when they are not.

If Canon would sell their batteries for even a reasonable price, I would buy them, but I simply will not spend what they are asking. We've bought third-party batts for 5 years now and never had a problem with any of them.

Yes, third-party, NOT counterfeit :)

i always use Sterlingtek batteries- never ever ever had a problem with them and i've bought 8 so far for the 400d and my current 40d.

They're allegedly made in the same factory as the Canon ones, but have nearly dbl the mah rating and mine have never ever screwed up after continuous usage.

But, these are 3rd party i think, not 'Cannon' batteries or whatever. Oh, they were from eBay too :)
