Hello everyone,

Since buying my sigma 105 f/2.8 macro lens, I have found further need for a ring flash, or something that will allow me to achieve faster shutter speeds/smaller apertures. I have an old nikon SB-24 which would be fine, except that when I am close to my subject the flash hits the barrel of my lens, thus not hitting the subject.

Anybody know how to build a cheap ring flash that I could use for macro photography?

Cheers, and happy holidays!

i think what you're looking for is something like this!
it's not quite cheap though and you can actually buy a seperate macro ring flash for that money...i have also been thinking about building one of those my own, but haven't come up with a construction yet...
btw i also came across this. it's selfmade, but probably isn't what you're looking for, because you just put it infront of the front diffuser of the flash, so not suited for macro, but probably cool for portrait.

My new home made ring flash is ready!!! Please, please, please leave comments about your experiences and how I can improve it!
Check it out: www.haringphotography.com/blog/?p=7
I use it with a Canon 85mm 1.2L and 35mm 1.4L on 5D.
So far I am happy!

I made this one about 4-5 months ago but and I tested it out a few times but I didn't really care for the results.

Mephisto gave you the Ebay link, here's the actual companies www Ray-Flash and there's a list of distributors you can click on. It looks good, and has gotten rave reviews but about USD $200-00 retail. What I like is no extra cables to snag and get in your way.

Rayflash is nice, but doesn't support very many flashes. There was a recent write up at Strobist that shows the differences between the Rayflash and the Orbis (which I own).write up pt. 2 The Orbis can be used on most any flash, Rayflash is limited in that regard.
When I first bought it, I sat there thinking, can I really spend $200 on a damn piece of plastic?
When I got it, I was pretty impressed with quality though. The lighting is very even and nice, and I use it primarily for macro though I have done some portrait work with it. So far I've been using it with an SB-900 and SC-28 and the cord really doesn't get in the way. You can definitely DIY it, but I'm not sure your light distribution will be as even, support E-ttl or not suffer immensely from decrease in output. Honestly though, if you're looking purely for macro, you can just use a DIY diffuser and MAYBE a bracket (Check out this guy's stuff to see what I mean... search his stream for diffuser and you'll see his setup), or get the SC-28 and put your flash wherever you wanted. The Orbis and Rayflash just give a larger area for diffusion so the lighting is more even and it's a ring instead.

I ended up making this ring flash. It was a fun project and surprisingly, produced good results. I modded the design, using white plexiglass as my diffuser. Plus, my flash is positioned on the top, not on the bottom.
Giving a more natural shadow, to the bottom of subjects. I will try to include some samples soon. If you have the time, give it a try! Hard to beat this light quality, for $30 in materials! Just be prepared for questions in public.
