I received e-mail from them on 4/14 that it was in and I had it ordered within 5 minutes of readingthe message. I just received it tonight along with my 550ex. The DOF on this lens is amazing.
In this picture the beer bottle is right up against the chicken. Picture was taken handheld / full open at 1.8 @ 1/3 second.
Another at 1.8 : 1/90 sec. (with 550ex flash)
And one more with one of the dogs. at 1.8 : 1/90 sec. (with 550ex flash)

Well, if the 50mm 1.8 is not in stock, then how about the 50mm 1.4?
It's got better bokeh, but will put your pocket book back some. |

I think that 50 f/1.8 is the sharpest lens I´ve tried on my camera yet...
Yet to try some of those L type ones though, but hey you wouldnt expect that cheap plastic junk to be any could would you ....
here is one taken with that 50mm 1.8

if i were canon or b&h i'd look into increasing the stock on this lens. seems like after months of being out of stock, canon or b&h would realize the money they are loosing by not having them available.
the boom in DSLRs has to have caused all this. when i got my 50mm a year ago, i had no problem finding one available. |

maybe they think that someone who can't get the 1.8 might pony up for the 1.4 if they can't get it.

how much is the price difference and is it really worth it ?
thanks |

The difference is significant. I too picked one up today. I can't wait to use it as most of what I like to do is low-light portrait photography of my nephew. |

diffrence is mainly that one is f/1,4 USM and the other one is f/1,8 none USM, and cheaper built..
If its worth it depends what you value those diffrences ...

Although the price difference is significant, to me, going with the 1.4 is worth the extra money. Not only do you get the obvious 2/3rd's extra stop wide-open, you get USM, full-time manual focus, an 8-blade diaphragm instead of 5-blade (resulting in noticeably more pleasing bokeh IMHO), less flare, less vignetting (not a big a deal on a non full-frame DSLR), and metal lens mount instead of plastic.
That said, every Canon owner should have one of these 50mm lenses in their bag...

I certainly agree with EddyG that the 1.4 is worth the difference based on optical performance, for all the reasons he stated, but...
- It does have the older "micro motor" USM, not ring USM, so no full-time manual focus :(
- The build quaity is just OK, could really be a bit better for the money. I don't like that it's not internal-focusing.

Actually, it does have micro USM, not ring USM, but does have full-time manual focus like all USM lenses. I find it to be very useful as it's not the quickest or most accurate lens when it comes to focusing, and the FTM allows you to adjust quickly if necessary. I absolutely love my 1.4 - by far the sharpest lens I have and it works perfectly sandwiched by my 17-40 and 70-200. It's worth picking up the 1.4 version if it's a focal length which you use often, or if you need all the low-light performance you can get. It also has a wonderful effect at 1.4 that the 1.8 doesn't quite seem to have.

I stand corrected, the 50/1.4 does in fact support FTM, even with the micro-motor USM. I must have too many lenses, I'm getting confused, LOL. Tough problem to have.

Nothing like a bit of measurabation on a Saturday morning...at a time when, considering I spend all week in front of one, I shouldn't be at my computer!
