Does anyone use a 1.4 teleconverter on a zoom or are they best used on Primes?

I've used a Tamron 1.4 teleonverter with the 50-500 Bigma.

The main issue with teleconverters is the loss of light. A 1.4x TC turns an f/4 lens into a longer f/5.6 lens, and your camera will not autofocus with an aperture smaller than f/5.6 (it'll still work manually). You lose a little sharpness, as you'd expect from any additional glass, but a sharp zoom lens will work fine. This was taken handheld at full zoom with a Canon 70-200 f/4L and 1.4X TC:
