I want to put a gradient on the bottom of a shot going up, I can do it sideways etc but can not figure out how to bottom it. I can not seem to be able to do it, is it possible, is it so easy that I am goign to hide under a rock when I am told how to do it??

Thanks =)

One way, flip the photo upside down then apply gradient, then flip it back. Probably not the right way, but a way.

If you're using photoshop, the gradient tool shares a spot in the toolbar with the paint bucket. Select the grad tool, click where you want the gradient to start, and drag to where you want it to end. Horizontal, vertical, diagonal, it's up to you.
If I'm misunderstanding the question, I apologize.

If you're trying to progressively darken the bottom of the image so it's darker at the edge than it is towards the center, then:

1. Set gradient tool to "foreground to transparent".
2. Set color picker in tool palette to default (black fore, white back)
3. Create new empty layer, setting mode to "multiply" and checking "Use multiply-neutral color (white)"
4. Select gradient tool and draw on the multiply layer, starting at the bottom edge and drawing straight up. "Shift" key will constrain the movement of the cursor to 45-degree increments, making it easy to draw straight up.
5. Use "edit/fade gradient" to adjust the opacity of the gradient to suit, OR fade the layer opacity to do same. If you're applying more than one gradient to the layer, best to fade each individually with edit/fade.

That ought to do it :-)
