I want to purchase the iPod Classic 120gb.
I have seen them with 6th generation series.
Is the 6th generation the latest? or are there other newer models?

I'm not sure but I have one of the first of the 30gb Ipods. I got it at walmart in November of 2005 if I remember correctly. It still functions perfectly. Plays videos as well!

unlike the guitar you are buying for you son, This one is easy, hardest part is choosing a color. I have the 80gig classic and I love it. I would like to offer some advice. unless you are planning on loading 1000 movies onto the ipod 80 gig will prob serve you well, I have 2500 songs, 6 audio books various video and audio podcasts and at least 12 movies inluding all three of the LOTR extended versions the first 3 star wars the simpsons movie and several others, I still have 50 gig of free space. So you could probably save yourself a little coin and avoid the 120 gig. |

6th generation is the iPod Touch I believe. The iPod Classic video, the one before the Touch is 5th generation. |

Can I be the devil's advocate here? Why an IPod? Some other makers (Creative and Sandisk being my personal faves) make some excellent media players that don't lock you into using ITunes. I've also been hearing a lot of good things about the 2nd generation Zunes. You have more choice than what Apple offers.

But aftermarket support for Ipods is HUGE. No other mp3 player has as much aftermarket docks, transmitters etc. |

I guess it depends on your usage and if that choice of accessories is important. Nothing I do with mine will not work via a normal stereo jack, and there are similar accessories for the other brands. (Granted, you don't have a choice of 700 different speaker docks, but how many are you going to buy?) I have an inexpensive transmitter that plays my Sansa Clip over the radio quite nicely. |

But apple is THE standard. All sorts of things are offered for iPods in teh way of accessories, docks, etc.
Sometimes it's easier to go with #1.

Is there an echo in here? LOL
I go tmy wife a sandisk thing a couple years back before all the big capacity HD deals came out. I'm thinking of getting something to hold all my music (all 25 gb of it) and while there is a lot out there, the iPod is what I'm leaning toward for the very reason it's 'the' standard.
The only people i hear that badmouth it are the anti-apple league (that are usually anti-any market leader)

It's not just the dock and speakers, but the cases, other programs and accessories too. Besides, why would you bitch about iTunes? It's free, works great and its not like you have to use iTunes to buy music to use the program. It's just an interface.
My experience is that all the other MP3 players are still trying to catch up to Apple. If you want to be a hater, that's fine, but you can't deny that the iPod beats the others hands down. |

you can get some pretty cool games for ipods from itunes.
Texas hold em poker is a must have if you like poker.
I have owned some creative labs mp3 players in the past and loved them, with exception of the Zen. Which had a horrible battery life and was not very user friendly because of the touch sensitive controls.
We have two ipods now, they are the only apple products in our house.

Not an Apple hater at all. I love the Mac, and the Ipod has a lot going for it. My (very) personal experience and opinions are:
-ITunes has become bloatware. I am partial to smaller, lighter apps that do fewer things, but do them extremely well, with a minimum of unnecessary eye candy. I do recognize, however, that the all-in-one approach of ITunes is a positive feature for most.
-I prefer to go with non-proprietary things when it is a choice that does what I want. (A bit of a glass house there, I should really be using GIMP, but I have used PSP for so many years already, it is what I know) I like to be able to drag and drop my MP3 files onto my music player, and not mess with libraries and playlists.
-Anything over an Ipod shuffle is overkill for my usage. I keep two players in the car. A 1GB Sansa Clip with podcasts, and a 2GB Clip with music. I don't want my entire music collection with me, just a bunch of favorites. Even my 2 Gig player is not full.
-The hip factor of the IPod means nothing to me. I'm a boring 40-something. I'm not cool or hip. Now something with a high geek factor, on the other hand...
Just as there are good choices in cameras besides the market leading Canon & Nikon, there are also good choices in media players besides the market leading IPod.

- You can drag and drop with iTunes. I do it all the time.
- I never mentioned Apple's "hip" factor, I don't care either, but all the other MP3 players provide is some incentive for Apple to stay ahead of the rest. Apple is at the top because they the have the best interface...period. All of the others are kludgy at best.
As to the proprietary or non-proprietary thing, who cares? I just want what works best, maybe you're willing to settle for sub-par quality to avoid something "proprietary" because that's "bad" I dunno. Everything's got proprietary content; your car, your watch, washing machine, computer hardware, camera, vacuum cleaner, light bulbs...etc. Why avoid it?
