...and there I was being so impressed with u're good manners, ....and now I'm more impressed, by the fact that u have embraced 'Woo'sie' status, especially now that I know the 'Fire-eater' would set you on fire for practice, and then run a scientifice analysis on your demise for fun!!!! I've just realised that my life is not so boring after all, especially, the front row seat I could get on this one. Best of Luck! ...u're gonna need it, and the Aussie team is going to kick u're a... this week. Okies, petal! Hugs and best wishes! |

And second
Vote and comment on all pictures in the challenge, its not like you have to write a freaking book, just spend a few seconds to say what you like/don't like about the picture.

I reckon Langdon should run a surprise challenge, no notice, every now and then that is only open to people who have commented more than they have received. With no warning, people can't then give crap comments in the days leading up so that they can make it.......
It was done before I beleive...... |
thats actually a pretty cool idea. does he ever read these threads? |
He has more than a pair eyes... SCs are also his eyes, keeping him informed of worthy threads, and ideas :\
also you could use forums to give your challenge ideas to him. He puts them onto his dart board and throws one dart, or two a day. |
Is Langdon Santa Claus? He does seem to be able to tell who is naughty, and who is nice. (the scrub)

To the OP
One point that's worth mentioning, all the comments that are telling you what they don't like about your shot you haven't bothered to mark as helpful. You have only marked the ones that say they like your shot as helpful .... so if the critical comments are not helpful to you why should anyone bother to leave them?
I'm not having a go, just making a point :)

Ahhh.... and another one plays into the hands of the voting Trolls. While I sympathize with your plight, it just ain't gonna happen. My personal and somewhat un-humble personal beliefs are that the folks who vote really low come in a couple of categories. Some are very judgmental in their voting. (likely you will get some comments from these folks. Then comes the trolls who like to see people gripe in the forums, and I suspect those who are trying to enhance their finishing position by voting low on other people. (fortunately most of the latter are scrubbed by the software at the end of the week.)
In the end, a large number of people just don't comment a lot. Not much to be done about it. If we forced comments we would wind up with comments like. =/ and =]. Which is about the same as no comment to me....

OK, seen this thread before...I generally vote and comment 100% when I do so. That takes a fair bit of time esp as I am on dialup! And I usually leave fairly lengthy comments, I think only kaiser chef left longer comments than mine in the Art challenge recently.
As for the crappy comments, and you will get them no matter what...you just can't let them get to you. Some are thoughtless comments made by newcomers to the site, unfamiliar with basic dpc etiquette, so I'll pm them and civilly try to explain things to them. Generally works. Just keep it to a pm, don't drag it into the forums!
And very early on, I learned that if at least 50% of the comments said the same basic things - 'blurry', 'oof' etc (see my wayyy early stuff, you'll see what I mean)...they were likely right! So I take the gist of those comments to heart and figure out how do I fix this problem?
In the case of blurry/oof, getting a cheap tripod helped a huge amount. Then I got a better quality p&s, then a DSLR, and good quality tripod! So now, if I get comments about say my pping skills (or lack thereof) I pm certain dpcers, explain my problem and ask for help.
If I don't know who to pm, I start a thread and ask, though only after searching previous forums, to ensure I'm not flogging a dead horse overmuch. At the very least I end up with the name of a useful and sympathetic person to ask about things.
hope this helps!

I've been a member now for over 3 years and, as has been said, this issue raises its head time and time again.
My own statistics show almost a 3:1 ratio of comments made to received, but hey, I haven't stopped commenting because there are always images that motivate me to do so.
It is frustrating when you are not scoring in the range you think you should be, but are not receiving comments to give you a hint of why not. But, I will reiterate trevytrevs post above to post after the challenge and ask for specific feedback. I have done this in the past when I've been at a loss to why a shot scored lower than expected and find that while, yet again you may not get a vast number of comments, they will generally be of greater depth.
Don't give up.

From his profile..

If its that simple, why are you experiencing a shortfall of 576 comments.. all you have to do is spend a few a few seconds saying what you like/dont like about the shot,. its not like you have to write a freaking book..

like i said before, this was not an attack, I recently realized how crappy it was not to comment, and this was meant to be a sort of petition to get everyone to start commenting as much as possible. |

Sometimes it's best to hang out a while, see how things are done, make a few friends, THEN scream at people and tell 'em how to be.
It seemed one whole heck of a lot more like a bludgeon than a petition.

Another one for the dust bin.
Let's let it sleep now.
We all had our say and hopefully something has been learned by all.

Thanks Susan. Hence why it takes me (and you, and some others as well) so long to comment. I don't have the spare Hours this week to get to the Backlighting ones.
